4dvz
If it was really that easy to get skyrim to unlock on steam a day or so early, everyone would be doing it. It`s not "that easy" to even come across such information about how you could do that, and think about what % of the Steam customers have actually tried it out.. my bet is that a very very low %. And if it works, Steam will never know about those few %. You only find out by trying is my quess.

babis8142
My guess is that Steam uses windows time to figure out the timezone. I don't think it's about IP address. I don't think you can fool Steam into thinking you live in a different Country with IP anyway. Judging by how the network works (I know something about something) they know which country you're in. You CAN'T fool them. That's because it's the IP provider that tells them about you.
4dvz
Don`t know about it, the IP provider would be shown as something else than my real IP provider if my connection goes through another IP. After that anyone who`s observing my connection sees only the information the proxy gives away from itself. (Me ----(my IP, provider etc)---> Proxy ----- (False IP, no information about me) --->)But I don`t think I would go for it anyways, not for 10-12 hours of waiting since I quess it`s not worth the risk of if somehow Steam would be able to detect it (which I don`t believe tough) I might get banned or something. :) Edited November 9, 2011 by 4dvz

4dvz
K thanks for the info superjeno, I believe it works but I might just wait for the proper activation time because in the end it`s only about half a day.
Handofbane
K thanks for the info superjeno, I believe it works but I might just wait for the proper activation time because in the end it`s only about half a day. From what I have seen/read, Steam doesn't just track your downloads based on what time zone your IP is in, it also has multiple region-locks in place which can outright prevent players in certain countries from getting the same version of some games as players from other countries. This is not just related to languages, but content in some cases (some games based on violence level, etc., may be banned/illegal to download in some countries while legal in other). One example would be Fallout 2, which is available on Steam, but has alternate European/North American versions due to the built-in ability to kill children (with appropriate penalties for doing so) - games with this content are legal in the US, but outright illegal in many European nations (I believe Germany was the main one mentioned around the time FO2 was originally released), so Europe gets a different version of the game with children removed outright from the game. That said, just be patient, and do something else for a while before you get your game installed/activated. A few extra hours early is not going to make much difference when most folks around here are expecting 300+ hours out of the game.
4dvz
Good point on the content, but I certainly hope they don`t cut content from the game that can be bought in Finland because Germans wanted something lol. It must be country specific, not continent.

epope99
We all do. There was a bit of confusion at first because Steam had it set to PST (GMT - 8 ) but now it will change itself to 12:01AM local time, whatever that is for you. it unlocks whenever vavle emplyees get into the office. its been this way for all games released in steam on useing steam. so it could be 9am there time or could be noonish.
