Monster Respawns? I really and passionately hope not

haha, that certainly was a lively set of replies.

Well, I respect your views of course, but simply cannot understand that viewpoint despite your valiant efforts. I played Oblivion for about 180+ hours (and then started another game, heavily modded for another 150+ hours) and still did NOT finish all the game content in either game. You telling me you all cleared out the game multiple times? that there wasn't enough monsters to "sharpen" your skills? I maxed out every score just about and that was only 2/3 of the way through every dungeon. How many thousands of hours did you all clock? Seriously, start another game with another character. Also I put 200+ hours into F3 and 200+ hours into FNV and barely finished everything there was to do including some of the DLC. I never needed to fight in an area more than once and Fallout, thankfully, at least the dungeons did not respawn, although irritatingly certainly wilderness areas did. I had far more experience than the game allowed you to use.

So, I'm afraid I stick to my original comment - respawning dungeons is simply silly. How can the world feel dead? There's no point to going back to the same dungeon once you finish it and while I can see the point more to respawns in the wilderness, do you really expect to run into a monster, even in a fantasy medieval setting , all the time, particularly in a well traveled area? Quite frankly, I found that annoying, particularly in what should be a safe corridor.

I never ran out of "life" to see. Gothic 3 and Risen had no respawns and those games never felt dead to me and I had many many many hours of fun in those games.

On the contrary, I actually get a real sense of accomplishment clearing out the way, as if I am making some progress against the hordes. Otherwise, it feels pointless, like a 1980s dungeon crawl game, where monsters never end and you keep putting quarters into the machine. ho-hum. Space Invaders meets Bard's Tale, lol.

But that's my 2 cents and vote for the developers. I am genuinely surprised I am appear to be the only one who feels this sense of pride and accomplishment in making safe the countryside, in one of these games. Perhaps there are others at there with my view point that need to be heard. However, if indeed I am in the minority, I will have to rely on the modding community again, although sadly, I NEED to get this game immediately :) so for sure, some places will likely be re-inhabited I am sure...

But thanks everyone for the good debate.

Hmm... addendum... re-reading some of the responses - well I guess if you have put more than 200-300 hours into the game (i.e. 400-1000 hours, etc.), I could see why you want more content, tho I still think it would be better to start a different character. Still, it would be neat if the developers gave us that choice, but I guess they rely on the modding community to do that, which fortunately for TES games is no problem!

Personally I like the respawns especially in a particularly entertaining cave.

Besides, I was under the impression that those areas gain a Cleared designation once you completely empty it. I was also under the impression that some of those areas can completely pwn you because they're set at a higher level than you might be able to handle for the time being. I hope I'm not wrong, I'd love that sort of challenge.

Why shouldn't it?

Because of silly things like "immersion" or "realism"?

Because the "you can clear the same dungeon over and over again" is a dumb excuse too, because you can just cast the same spell over and over again to get to master level in that spell school, instantly gaining about 20 levels, but it's boring and a really bad idea, just like killing the same monsters, finding the same treasure (or not) over and over again.

Almost everyone is focusing on dungeons, but forget that for a minute. Imagine an empty EXTERIOR world without monsters. What would be the point of exploration? Selling stuff off for gold, to do what, buy armour and defend yourself against butterflies? It simply makes no sense to not have respawning creatures, unless you're planning to just take screenshots after killing everything off.

I kind of see where you are coming from with the no re-spawning thing. It would give some accomplishment and there are even more places in Skyrim from what they have said.

On the other hand I can see where the others are coming from as well. if a place is cleared out then it is only realistic that some new monsters, animals or people would move in to the place.
