Hutchie28
New member, blah blah...First let me tell you that frustratingly, I only got to play for an hour this morning before having to go to work. I'm currently at work, not working but reading Skyrim reviews and impressions. My question is regarding the summon spell (I love conjuration and will base my character around it). The spell seems to charge for a few seconds, and you see the magicka bar drain, but when you release the button sometimes the spell doesn't cast. I was wondering if the spell needs to be targeted on an enemy or if there is some indication of when the spell is charged and ready to cast. Just a little confused and didn't have time to experiment. Thanks!
AltreU
There is a patch currently in waiting that may fix such a bug. Typically, when you summoned a creature in the previous games, it spawned in a random location by your side. In Skyrim, I think summoning works by targeting an area near by (say right in front of you on the ground), then casting the spell. It does sound like what happened to you was a bug. Hutchie28
I don't even know if it was a bug, I just thought maybe they'd done it differently this time around.
AltreU
Try aiming your curser at the ground when you use the spell. What is the name of the spell?
tylitalo
"summon familiar" would be my guess.
Hutchie28
The spell is 'summon familiar' - it's one of the spells you start out with
luthienanarion
You have to target the ground where you want the summon to materialize. The rune spells work the same way.
Hutchie28
Cool guys thanks for the tip. Now I just need to wait until this bloody shift ends so I can get home for a proper session. I was halfway to the college of winterhold!Edit: also, targeting the ground for summoning creatures is a great idea IMO as it'll be easier to make tactical creature summons! :D Edited November 10, 2011 by Hutchie28
Vyalar
I've experienced the same thing myself. I use my Flame Atronach all the time, however the spell might only cast correctly 1 in every 3-5 tries (I make sure to cast it in range, if it isn't in range then the crosshair turns red). My magicka gets restored at an insane rate to kinda make up for the miscast I assume, though I do not get all the magicka back from the cast. It's getting annoying for me and I've been trying to figure out if anyone else has experienced anything like this. The best way to pull off the summon ,I've found so far, is to make sure to cast in as big an open space as possible, but even then I don't always pull it off... weird. I was thinking maybe armor has something to do with cast rate, but I only wear robes, gloves, and boots that give no armor. I also have a few conjuration perks to improve summoning stuff so I don't think it's cause my skill is too low either.
