Restoring an old save file

Its fine, you can put me in any country you like, I hate my own country anyway.

Unfortunately, no, it did not fix the missing content for that save. The root of it must be elswhere.

I also tried launching Skyrim (Which is a whole another chapter in my "troubled games" book.) and I found z-fighting almost everywhere. It seems that my PC is just cursed with this.

I am hoping this thread isnt dying out yet because the situation is getting VERY messy.

I did something I shouldnt do - I cleaned the DLCs in FNVEdit. I dont even know why, I just did. Only now I have realised what a mistake it was.

So, what should I do, reinstall the game and do the same procedure with restoring my old files and then start over from there without any dumb stuff like this? Or is there anything else?

Thanks in advance.

You will need to at least "verify" files through Steam to get back to a vanilla game. Then reinstall mods that overwrite any vanilla files. Note that this will not affect the files in your "Users" folder (verify doesn't touch those), so your save games and INI tweaks are safe.

Or you could re-install (in the same "restore saves" manner as before). If you decide to go that route, move Steam/FNV out of the "C:\Program Files" folder if you haven't already. That hasn't come up before because I know it is painful to do for many people, but it is the single most effective problem solving thing you can do. Fixes many "mysterious" problems. You can find my reasons for recommending it (along with a link to the official Steam procedure for doing so) in the "Installing Games on Vista+" article in my signature.

I'll keep monitoring this thread until you indicate the problem is solved or you are giving up. I just don't have anything new to suggest unless some new symptom appears. The "FNV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" wiki article I mentioned back in the beginning has all the basic things to check I can think of, and all the specific problems and solutions I know of (though I do keep adding to it).

Hello, sorry for the inactivity, I was on vacation.

Anyway, I reinstalled the game and restored my saves as I did in the beginning. Everything seems to be fine, except for our well known problems.

I know that cleaning the DLCs is a VERY bad idea, but the only other dirty mod I have is The Inheritance. If you are unfamiliar with it, its a quest mod by Someguy2000. Is it safe to clean it? I would hate to do another reinstall.

The "dirty edits" in "The Inheritence" are "4 deleted navmeshes" which I at least was unable to recover. So my recommendation would be to leave it alone unless you know how to fix the missing navmesh problems.

That said, here is a known problem for some people:

The Inheritance.ESP: (Move as low as possible in LO)
* Bradley hangs while reading the letter from Sellers. (Initially meet Bradley & fight Fiends from outside the Westside barriers; not from perimeter high ground.)
setstage xx000ADD 25 (where "xx" is your LO index for the plugin)

to get past this hang point.

Following the Wrye Blash Pictorial Guide, at one point it says "Select any newly added, un-selected mods... Then click Rebuild Patch". None of my mods are "newly" added and all of them are checked except for the home mod which is incompatible with the quest mod. Wrye Flash created a patch as soon as I opened it. Does this mean I am done? Or do I have to select the house mod and the bash patch will fix its incompatibilities?

At that point you are actually building your first BP. (Anything you saw earlier was simply creating an empty file.) The WBPG is indicating you only need to select unchecked ones and it will supposedly rebuild them all. (Not something I ever tried.)

All the plugins you intend the BP to use (which should be all of them EXCEPT for the existing BP file itself) need to be "enabled" (i.e. have a checked box). Be sure the BP file is unchecked. Personally I always select all the plugins (except for the BP file), right-click to get the context menu, and select "Mark Mergeable", and then "Rebuild Patch". Because I like having full control and being certain.

In the specific case of your "house mod" that caused problems before, it may or may not "fix" the incompatibilities. It depends upon what they are. First of all, you need to load that plugin into FNVEdit and check for errors. Note I said "check" and not "clean". (You should check with the author before "cleaning" any mod. Some dirty edits are deliberate.) If there are no "dirty edits" reported, then you want to have FNVEdit use the "xEdit-BASH-tags-autodetect" script to build a list of all the tags that apply to that mod. That is not to say you want to apply all those tags. (Bash tags "win" over untagged conflicts. Last "tag" wins "tag" conflicts; just like untagged winners.) You only want to apply tags that will cause that plugin's record of that type to "win" in the case of conflict with another plugin's record. Which you will determine by loading only the BP file into FNVEdit, which will in turn cause all the conflicting plugins to be loaded, and seeing the conflict winners under your "House plugin" and then those same records in the BP file. If your "house plugin" didn't win, then it needs a tag.

Frankly, given what you said about that plugin causing problems, I doubt the BP will fix it. But you can always try it and see, and simply rebuilt the BP without again if needed. Just don't resume playing (and saving) with it until you are sure it's fine.

I dont really need the house mod. Its nice but not something I cant live without. I think Ill just leave it disabled.

Good. Now test everything. Toggle on "God Mode" (console "tgm") and run around everywhere. Test everything you can think of. If you see something you are not happy about, remember that you can move some LOOT sorted files around to change the "winners", and then rebuild the BP.

Otherwise you should be good to play. If you encounter a problem, just ask.
