Restoring an old save file

Oh, one more thing, which might be a bit unfortunate. The "Bugs" thread is not solved and I mostly messaged one of the people for support. So you cannot really trace the issues trough my "Bugs" thread.

If you had the game's "auto-save" feature enabled, then it was "automatically" saving periodically. Which means if you DIDN'T manually create (by using the "Save" menu command) the save file you are restoring from, then it is likely corrupted. But that problem (if it exists) will likely show up as CTDs, unrelated to your graphics issues.

We've already covered my recommendations regarding the LOD and "z-fighting". Given the "z-fighting" solutions available didn't work, there doesn't seem to be anything else to do but live with it. How are you coming with rebuilding the LOD files? (There is a faint hope that might help with the "z-fighting", but no mention of it that I've seen.)

Hello, sorry for the inactivity, I was away and did not expect it would take so much time.

The save file we are restoring is a manual save created by me. As I said earlier, I have never loaded or continued from an autosave.

Unfortunately, I dont have time to play around with the LOD this evening and propably wont have time for it this week, so we will have to wait.

Uh-oh, this is disturbing.

So I reinstalled the game again, for good measure. The first thing I did was re-creating my bash patch. Then I proceeded to test the game. I ran around Jacobstown a bit, went to some modded locations and it was just fine. Then I travelled to New Vegas and got a CTD during the loading screen while entering the Strip. I restarted the game and I could enter the Strip without any issues. Didnt test more since then.

I seriously hope this isnt caused by save corrpution.

I'm not sure, but that fact that you were able to proceed after a restart of the game suggests you simply ran out of memory rather than a corrupt save. I always reboot my computer after a CTD, just to be sure I've flushed out memory. Given you are/were testing I would suggest you try to repeat the same actions and see if you can cause the CTD again. Then after a reboot see if a particular sub-set of those actions causes the same thing. Try to get it down to a repeatable small set of actions that cause the CTD. If it 's erratic (sometimes it CTDs, some time it doesn't) then it is most likely memory related ("fast travel" being one cause) rather than a corrupt file.

Take a look at the wiki article on "FNV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" Start with the checklist to try to narrow down potential causes, and then look at the Issues with CTD in the title. Be sure to include the "out of memory" issue as well.

Hello.

I am going away from home to a place with no internet connection and I am not bringing my PC with me. I will be off for 9 days, I will continue testing as soon as I come back.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have played around with the game for about an hour with no CTDs.

The next step would be the TES4LL procedure. I can make backups of the "meshes" and "textures" folders, but on VWD/LOD Overview it says that its intended for the Tamriel worldspace. "For any other worldspace, use MPGUI" Anything closer to that?

Good. That's significant progress.

As I recall, I was unable to get MPGUI to work. IIRC, I had to edit one (or more) of the TES4LL bat files so it would point to the FNV folder (or possibly the ESM, which is essentially what MPGUI does for you). After that it worked fine. I believe this information is in the documentation.

Unfortunately I am away from my home computer at the moment and thus unable to be more detailed until I return in another 9 days.

That is unfortunate, because I am going away next week for the whole month.

Maybe I will just try FNVLODGen now and leave TES4LL for when I come back. Its just too much work for now and I am kind of busy at the moment.
