Steam is a program through which you activate the game and which you use for updates and such.

It's also a digital library/store. See: http://store.steampowered.com/about/

 

Am I correct then, that the actual game is not on the disk, that the disk only installs steam so I can download the game?

 

I don't understand when I pre-ordered Skyrim I wasn't asked if I wanted the Steam version, it just arrived on the doorstep this morning and right now I am not a happy bunny because I don't want a Steam version.

The disk will also contain most the files, so all you will have to download is any up to date patch, all versions use steam minus the Russian version I believe which uses a different DRM but is also region locked.

They called it Steam because you can usually see the steam coming out of ears of the people playing games based on it :whistling:

 

Sorry, that describes me right now, I take it from your reply that steam has drawbacks, what are they?
