Thieves Guild Quest Line Possible bug. CONTAINS SPOILERS!

SPOILERS AHEAD.

Hey guys. I think I've run into a very large, very annoying bug. But I am also entertaining the possibility that I am doing something wrong. So I've done the steal ring/reverse pickpocket ring bit for Brind-whatshisname, he gave me a quest to get money from three shopkeepers. I did all of that without brawling/killing any of them (found out about the lizard's family, stole the statue from the other chick, and stood near the dwemer vase), and got their money. I went back to Brind-whatshisname and I handed the quest in, we talk a bit, and the last thing he says is along the lines of "why don't you follow me so I can show you what we're really all about". He gets up, walks out the back to the Ratway Cistern and I follow him in there. But once I get in there I am tresspassing and the thieves all attack me and I die, and even when I fight back two are unkillable. If Brind-whatshisface leaves into the Cistern, and I don't follow, none of the thieves in the tavern will talk to me. Vex won't give me my Thieves Guild uniform, or anything.

Did I do something wrong, or is this some really annoying bug? Reloading didn't help. I think I just about tried everything I could think of. I made a Khajiit for the express purpose of joining the Thieves Guild, and I have something like 30 hours played over the last two days before I came to the Thieves Guild stuff, I really don't want to restart.

I'm playing the PC version too, in case someone knows some kind of console hackery to fix this. If it's a bug. :/

Wow... That sounds rough and it's the first i've heard of it. You don't have any earlier saves from before you started any of the TG questline? The only thing i could suggest would be to use a console command to auto complete this particular part of the quest. It's a shitter i know but it might be the only thing other than a restart (or even a full reinstall). There was a console command function on past ES games that allowed you to auto complete in case of bugs. This might be your only hope :(

Even when I use 'setstage tg01 200' to complete the quest, I still get the same result. I'm always flagged as trespassing in the cistern and I don't get the next quest in the line. :/

If anyone is still having this problem, I had the exact same one. I solved it by typing "setstage TG02 10" into the console, without quotes. This should force the next quest after "Taking Care of Business" to start. You might need to have Brynjolf down in the Flagon before you enter the command in.

On a similar note, later in the quest line, for "Blindsighted," this quest refuses to start for me. I have no earlier save to load, so I'm looking for another way around it. Setstage didn't work. EDIT: Reloading fixes not being able to use SetStage properly. I actually had to restart Skyrim for it to work.

So, i am having the exact same issue, and after a lot of trial and error, i think i have figured out the cause, (at least for me) it seems to be a glitch involving any mod or cheat used to modify the locations you find.. for instance a house, castle or mansion that is automatically discovered, as well a using the tmm 1 cheat. now, i know nothing about coding or modding, but that seems to be the issue present. I have started a new save file, clear of any and all map location mods, to test this theory, i am in character creation as i type this, and will let anyone still having this issue know how this theory fixes it once i get to alduins wall in the main quest and try to join the thieves guild.. thanks all :) ~*~Ryoichui~*~

I'm getting the same thing, hadn't played the game until recently but since I bought Dawnguard and have that installed I've started playing again. Going through the thieves guild questline I got through the first two quests and went into the cistern after Brynjolf. I get to the center of the Cistern and everyone begins attacking. I had Serana with me and thought she was the problem, so I tried reloading and going in without her but was still attacked.

It seems Bethesda broke the Thieves Guild quest with one of the recent patches (1.6 from what I've been seeing so far, 1.7 hasn't fixed it though apparently). Now I'm somewhat concerned about what other questlines were broken in the recent updates.

EDIT: College of Winterhold quests are also not working for me once 'Under Saarthal' has been completed...
