PSQGL
I'll try Solitude or anyway up North: I want to see aurora borealis, feel isolated and AWAY from those pesky Imperials and Aldmer (STORMCLOAKS FTW!) Solitude is an Imperial nest. Try Windhelm instead if you like Stormcloaks. Thanks for the tip. I'll haul my Breton bum there once I return the sword to my Nord wife-to-be and see if housing is available :D
doddibot
I might sound like a haughty Imperial, but Solitude is the only town worthy of being called a town in Skyrim, and even then only barely. It reminds me of Ebonheart in Morrowind: more of a port district of a city, than a city itself. Markath is just a few holes in a cliff, Riften is a nice lake village but nothing more, Whiterun is merely a fort on a hill and Windhelm reminds me of Kvatch after the Battle of Kvatch. PSQGL
Well, I for once love the "quaint little village" look. So, big cities like Solitude are OK for tourism but I wouldn't live there.
TwoToedSloth
All I can say is: I miss Morrowind. :( The cities are all pretty bland, with very little diversity between any two cities. The culture of each city is done very well in this game and all of the cities really have that nordic feel to them, but I was hoping for at least one city to break the mold. Markath is a nice change of pace, but it's so dreary. I miss the craziness of running around Morrowind and happen chancing on the larger-than-life cities. Just had an epic feeling and gave the regions a unique identifier. I feel like you could plug x-skyrim city in spot y and you wouldn't notice. I guess that has a lot to do with fast traveling as well. :/ My favorite is WhiteRift or whatever it's called. The one in the middle of the map that looks like it's from LotR. Pretty city, nice people, house and merchants are all close to the fast travel point. :)
DyingAtheist
Definitely Whiterun for me, not sure why but I love the feel of it and it's layout. Suppose it's the first bigger town you find as well so that helps.
