BSA unpacker crashing for textures

Recommended Posts

You can use BSAopt by Ethatron: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/247/

It has never failed me this far, so I can definitely recommend it. I myself use the 2.0.0 beta (16 December 2012), but you can try the beta 2 also if you want, I have not yet used that version myself, but the plan is to test it at some point.

All the contents inside a bsa are selected for extraction by default, so unless you want to extract the complete bsa, you need to

  • open the archive, select the topmost node
  • check "Show recursive", then click the red button to uncheck all
  • untick "Show recursive", and the browse and select the ones you want to extract, then extract

Hopefully that helps a little. I have never used that "BSA unpacker" thingy, so I cannot help with it.

Did you try this:

  • open the archive, select the topmost node
  • check "Show recursive", then click the red button to uncheck all
  • untick "Show recursive", and the browse and select the ones you want to extract, then extract

It is possible to extract individual files. The program has all files selected by default, and you need to do that to unselect the ones you do not want. At least with 2.0.0 beta.

Okay, gret if you now managed to do it. It got me by surprise the first time, too. The "show recursive" is necessary since the red and green button only affect all files visible in the lower list, so unless it is ticked, none of the files are affected unless they happen to be at the root (data folder) which probably never (or seldom) happens. Maybe it was mentioned in the readme or something, but I did not read it, either, and went poking around the first time. Managed to extract a few complete vanilla bsa archives before I realised that trick. :P

For example when going to modify vanilla assets, or use modders' resources packed in a bsa (like the Vicn creature pack), unpacking them is mandatory. Also, it is possible that someone has packed in an unrelated file that needs to be removed (some older mods include the SKI player load game script, which they should not), or if someone just wants to have a look at a script source file that has been packed in a bsa file. For example all my scripted mods include the source code in their bsa archive, so people can review it if they want. Or that is how I would view unpacking bsa archives... I think.

I'll remember that, thanks again for the help.

I'm not so sure a person should be decompiling / "unpacking" other people's work ...

I think (g) says it all. I've been a programmer all my life and it's common knowledge you can't decomplie or disassemble things.

I may be wrong here but it don't look like it ... Glad you got a good laugh out of it ... never realized this forum was so toxic.
