Mystery Textures

Hello, folks.

I reset my mod collection, doing a clean install of Oblivion (steam, GOTY w/ SI), and a host of mods. Somehow, in all the hub-bub, nude textures were added to the game. It isn't something I wanted to install, but it's not much of a problem since I don't especially mind one way or the other. I almost never see the default underwear textures in the first place. Mostly I just have no idea where the textures came from, and want to know how it happened in case this simply one of many more errors and conflicts to come. Here is a list of what I installed:

In addition, I manually installed a Qarl's Texture pack 3 (Redimized version) and some OBSE plugins: menuque, Universal Silent Voice, Pluggy and (in preparation for Deadly Reflexes) Nifse. I'm pretty sure that's everything. I used BAIN and OMOD where convenient ... but built my own OMOD files in very few instances. As such, uninstalling about half of the mods would be a real pain. On the bright side, I followed pretty good procedure for cleaning the mods and establishing a load order. I was expecting some minor hiccups, but I was not expecting a texture I don't remember installing to arrive out of nowhere.

I haven't checked a male character, (or even looted armor off an NPC) since I started testing for stability, so it could be a female-only thing. I accidentally dropped pants instead of shoes from my inventory and thought something looked a little odd about the underwear texture--soon realizing that it's absence was what seemed strange. It's a completely fresh copy of Oblivion and an all new save game. Any idea where on Earth the nude textures came from? I'm mostly just worried this sort of thing is indicative of many, many bugs and issues yet to come ... it would be a relief to learn that one of the mods simply didn't advertise that it adds in nude textures and nothing it going too wonky.

On an unrelated note, I find myself unhappy with the female iron armor bottoms provided by, I suspect, OOO. Anyone know a good mod with something that looks a little more defensive than a skirt and some knee-pads? I'd like to overwrite the armor.

Hi,

texture replacers do not come with an esp file, so they won't show up in your load order. Check your downloaded files for HGEC, Exnems or Roberts (all I can think of).

If you are lucky you've made an OMOD before installing, otherwise you'll have to remove the meshes and textures yourself.

Thanks for the reply. Hmm. None of those look familiar, nor are in my folder of downloaded mods (I've saved the original files of everything I installed manually and most of the things I installed through BAIN and OBMM). I can't seem to find any manual installs that were pure texture replaces other than the rather massive Qarl's Texture pack ... which as far as I know didn't involve any nude textures. Where would I find the textures that are being replaced, and how would I restore them?

You will find the body meshes in Data\meshes\characters\_male

- femalefoot.nif

- femalehand.nif

- femaleupperbody.nif

- femalelowerbody.nif

textures in Data\Textures\characters\Race\female

- footfemale.dds and footfemale_n.dds

- handfemale.dds and handfemale_n.dds

each Race has its own texture folder, default for human would be Imperial

If you dont have any other folders don't worry, Oblivion uses the default ones inside the BSAs then.

If you dont want to mess around with those files manually, you could install the HGEC omod on top, choose the underwear version during install and let it overwrite anything. That should take care of the naked issue :)

For Armors have a look at EVE, makes all default armor a bit more womanly without making them skimpy ;)

Edit: OOPS, of course .nif, thanks Drake for pointing that out

Adding to this, it is a common misconception that nudity has anything to do with "textures"!

Actually you can have the most detailed genital area in the groin section of your body textures, it will never be seen when the "...lowerbody.nif" file contains an underwear "mesh" placed over it. That's where underwear comes from and where it was removed from to create nudity in the first place, the NIF files. AlfredTetzlaff listed the responsible NIFs inside "meshes/characters/_male" quite accurately already, just take a ".nif" instead of ".dds" as the suffix. That was a typo.

Again, the way the game is designed, textures cannot make a bodypart nude, so this is the wrong place to look for the cause. It's those NIF files you have to check up on.
