ctogher
:nazgul: Not to tread on any toes, offend sensibilities or get involved in meat pie wars.... I am seriously considering banning Xmas next year. Who else can honestly say that they have been met with one sincere wish for a happy, healthy and fulfilling Xmas this year. All around is the appearance of the thing. The sound of it, smell of it, but the SOUL has vanished. Very much...... If I am greeted again by a total stranger in a department store by, "Meeeerrry Xmas! How can I be of assistance?", I will be forced to give in to the voices, follow the miscreant home and perform unspeakable acts upon his parrot. Then there is the 'gift'. In my youth, we had to make a present. Good idea, plumbing the depths of your creative talent, (or shallows..). Actually spending more than 2 minutes deciding on who and what. Now it's all done for u. No input required other than the obligatory plastic. And I do mean plastic. Come January everyone will be eyeballing the Grandparents while fondling the morning paper, (the one with the knacker's add), and contemplating acts of random desperation to cover up the gaping black hole of debt. All the while, your freindly grocer, habberdashery, etc.. feels COMPELLED to decorate his store in an outlandish display of frivolity and chaos that would have S.F. questioning his relationship with his mother. But it doesn't end there. Then he has his staff dress up to look like the drug induced horrors of Karl Jung. Finished yet? NO! Then spends time and effort pumping them full of Xmas spirit, so that his "most valued" and "repsected" clients will not feel out of place or intimidated.... When did sanity take a back seat to the mindless spending spree. Name me five people close to you that can actually relate even a tenth of the story behind XMas. Who else is aware that the day bore special meaning only for druids until the church decided that they would usurp it in an effort to put an end to all that mistletoe, (that's where it started folks!). Naaaa..... next year I think I'll go sit under a tree and try not to look to hard lest I become infected, or worse yet, tell a complete stranger, who probably abuses puppies every Wednesday evening, to have a MERRY XMAS!!!! Malchik
"repsected"I think this word encapsulates eveything anyone can say on the topic! I was almost certainly repsected when I was a child. This would account for my abnormal sensitivity and extreme violent reactions to classical music. By classical I mean those antique melodies 'I'm dreaming of a white Christmas', 'Jingle Bells' 'Deck us all with bows of holly'. If this is a time of peace and good swill why should we be carrying bows. And holly is not the best wood for making them anyway. I gave up on Christmas a long time ago. I treat it as a three day break from work in which I eat and drink a little more than usual. Scrub that. I eat a little more than usual. Don't think I could drink more. It's a pagan festival (as stated by ctogher) and I love to pagan! It enables me to go around repsecting people all the time. So what I say is w00t! Never do anything anyone else expects and life is fun. Treat Christmas the same way. And believe me, the more people you repsect, the more fun you'll have. And so what if this is ****? Muahahahahaha..... (Floats quietly away on a haze of green tea and rice crackers.)
Shakkara
I hate christmas. And no-one gets cards from me and I don't read the ones I get either. I think it's something like fashion, people do it because everyone else does it, and they have to do it bigger and 'better' then their neighbours, not because they want it. People are sheep :ranting:
ohGr
i do agree, christmas has lost its spirit and has been taken over by simple act of showing off, or showing how many decorations one can set up around their house for a bigger electricity bill, i only liked chrismas as a celebration, not a shopping spree covered with sheep and people who dont know a single thing, then theres the churches that do their normal praying which i have no problem with as an atheist, but there are just some people who think christmas is supposed to be a "cool" time filled with fashion, i remember seeing on the news, a thing about fashion trends for chrismas, that angered me so much, i walked off, and started to play bloodrayne on my box (computer)

Laugh at it. Much better than hating!
ctogher
People are sheep Absolutley accurate! We are becoming a society of sheep. And everything around this time of year is aimed at perpetuating/reinforcing this "managed" behaviour. Conformity has somehow become 'cool'. Imagine how happy our civil masters would be if we all dressed/acted/thought the same? How much simpler their lives would become. How much more accurate those forecasts would be. The more I think about it, the more I want to dress in a duck suit and run around wishing everyone a Happy Lets_Go_Hunt_A_Wocket_Day!! (... blinks repeatedly and stares blankly at your left ear while mumbling.... "your wish is my command" ....)

Well at least I hate it because I do, not because I saw someone else hate it or because my friends hate it ^_^ Then again I sometimes indeed overreact and go do the opposite, which is bad, but who cares... I still hate having to spend 20 minutes waiting today before I could pay for just a single bottle of wine at the shop, while seeing everyone with trolleys full of stuff they don't really need and either empty or stressed looks on their faces. God I feel like Neo in the matrix watching those people outside the car, it's the same "It's unbelievable" kind of feeling. What's wrong with humans... :(
Zmid
Well, in my opinion, Christmas has become way too commercialised. I work in a games shop and Christmas is the busiest time of year by a stonkingly huge margin, and anything and everything is done to make the most of it. For example, up until halfway through October, you could get a PS2 and choose up to three games, any games at all, and you would get some sort of discount. Now, you can only get discounts on games over £39.99 unless you choose a set package with specific games.
Akrid
Well I doubt anything is celebrated the way it used to be hundreds of years ago. Maybe christmas isn't that great when you pick it apart and judge every aspect of it. But christmas does have some validity, it is a tradition. People make traditions based on food dancing music everything, christmas just happens to be a popular one. So what if people buy a lot of crap and all the stores are packed, it makes about as much sense as getting drunk, it does nothing for you but you do it to unwind or celebrate, it's once a year and it's a break from the everyday normal routine. I have no beef with christmas. Funny though that druids came up with a holiday with "christ" in the name, I guess they called it somthing else but would that really be christmas then? I belive it was halloween that the druids came up with and because the catholic church couldn't stop it's popularity they made it a bonified holiday. Whenever the holiday *christ*mas came along I'm sure it had somthing to do with the christan faith.
Eltiraaz
*claps* Finally someone who isnt a grinch. The Christmas season may have lost its "true meaning" for most of us but at least it gives people the initiative to be kind, and happy to others. If I am greeted again by a total stranger in a department store by, "Meeeerrry Xmas! How can I be of assistance?", I will be forced to give in to the voices, follow the miscreant home and perform unspeakable acts upon his parrot. Ok, yeah. Annoying, for sure. But Christmas gives us a valid reason to be friendly and outgoing when we normally wouldnt be. It doesnt matter if you believe in its ideals or not, we all understand kindness. Maybe its time for some of you to stop seeing things so negative, look at the donut instead of the hole. (wow how canadian do i look now :P )
