E-mail Trouble

Not really sure whether or not this is the right place to post this, so apologies in advance, but here goes nothing.

 

A few months back i decided to see whether or not i still had access to this account which i had made waaaaay back when with a now defunct e-mail address. So, i typed in my login info and lo and behold, it worked! Naturally, the first thing i did was go to my user settings to change my old non-existent e-mail to a new one only to get "That e-mail is already in use." red message box (which is complete baloney- the new email in question was made a few months back and the only account i ever had on this website was this one). So, after a few futile attempts i resorted to changing it to a backup email account. Now, i logged back in today just for the heck of it and tried the same thing; again "email in use" malarkey. So, i signed out and went to the "Create a New Account" page and guess what?! The email with which i wanted to replace my old email initially was indeed available for a new account. Now that leads me to wonder: why is it that i can create a new account with this email but can not update my pre-existing one with it? If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. If not, again, apologies for barking up the wrong tree and what have you.
