Shield + Sword only viable option on master?

Hey there everyone!

If you don't want to read over that text of crap down there, describing my experiences on master difficulty just skip to the question down the bottom of the post (:

I'm a gamer that plays every Game right away from the starton the highest difficulty and I do not bother to reload everytime i die cause hey, i can quicksave and i really really love CHALLANGES!

So after i started in Skyrim i wanted to dual wield or go with a 2hand sword, so i did this.

While dual wielding on master is (at least in my eyes) completly useless, cause you can not block and die in 2 or 3 hits (later on, in the beginning you can make it) i switched to my favorite class in dark messiah and generelly the one i like most: The rogue.

This one is even less viable if playing with 2x daggers. If there are more than 2 guys (esp. mages + 2hand guy + shield guy) you are not able to do anything. Even switching to bow does not really help you cause the few shots you get off are simply not doing the thing. It's even worse if there are like 4 Mages, so what yare you suppose to do...? (I spent like most of the level ups in health but did not helped a bit).

So finally after dying all over the place i switched and got to the sword + shield warrior and i was really suprised how effective this one is. You have so a lot of Armor, can block and almost most importantly interrupt with the shield. In comparison to the thief/2hand style of play you almost take no damage and deal by far enough. Problems are only places where you simply stand no chance cause the mass on enemys is too much

Where as there would be if you follow the companions and fight in the catacombs where he turns to the wherewolf with like 6 guys. I had to reload like 50 times till i got that. And "a night to remember" the part where you get in the dungeon with that 2 fire mages and 4 other mages, is in my eyes, nearly impossible to do.

So after playing a lot already lvl 23 or so AGAIN, i find me in certain places where the op-healthpool makes things nearly impossible to beat, but i keep reloading. The Problem i have right now are bosses + like 2-3 adds. Especially fire mages (which basically one hit me even though i have +50% magic resistance in the block tree) and bosses with 2hand swords, who kill me in 2hits everytime or get a finishing blow on me when i have like 4/5 of my health left. If there is like 1-2 caster adds or 1 taff guy with anither 2hand it's just redicoulus how hard it is.

In the end i just wanted to make life easier and saved before doing it - now i try to go around in fully ebony set with sword + shield + fully upgraded and see how that goes.

Finally the question:

Do you think that Shield + Sword are the only viable option on master? I think that rogue and 2hand are defintly not (cause of the lag of blocking ability [one 2hand wing brings you 2 one hand hits and an arrow in your chest so you'r dead]). I can't speak for mages though.

Quick Edit: With the ebony set it's, as expected, not really a challenge anymore, even though mages still are very hard to deal with. I will reload and play on as normal.

I am the same with games as you are, i myself set straight to the hardest it allows me to, and even more just like you i too am duel wielding, here is what i think...

I am only lvl 15 currently, i focus on archery/duel wielding stealth the whole lot etc, at first i was having trouble but honestly now even on master it's not hard really, i kill most enemies quickly due to the increased damage output with 2 weapons, just have to get use to it and remember you have power attacks with each hand, and both at same time which does tons more damage but sucks up tons of fatigue...blocking is not an issue for me anymore as i have learned to evade attacks more often now...only thing that has seemed slightly more harder to kill are 2h warriors, they hit hard but if you evade their attacks due to their attacks being slower, so evade and you will do fine...

btw, i just killed another dragon on master, was a frost dragon in the mountains o_O very fun fight and i didn't die once hehe

I use twin daggers and a bow so im constantly loosing health and it becomes quite tiresome, i think Shield + Sword are the only viable option AT ALL, unless your high levels so hit more with your weapons/spells in the first place you need to block to survive!

Thus far I have tried 3 toons. Mage, Thief and Warrior.

Mage and Thief you will find yourself on occasion to kite or run away to lose Line of Sight so combat can get risky or battles prolonged since you have to run off to recoup on occasion.

I just started a Tank, shield and board class. Let me tell you, this is the easiest combination if one wants to level fast. Battles are far less risky, especially if you get overrun.

Just get a companion that will do the tanking stuff for you. Use the wait command when you want to go and sneak about, then pull the baddies to him. Nothing better than unleashing dual wielding daggers of hell stamina & magicka drain on someone attacking your friend.

Also, if you go shield, get a mage companion. They'll rip everything to shred :)

Make sure to stock up on healing potions for them though, as well as resist frost/fire/poison salves.

Easy mode...i see no challenge....and who wants to level up fast in an rpg anyways? o_O

honestly...now that iv gotten farther than the last time i posted, game is not hard enough on master....needs an overhaul mod, gotta wait atleast a year for those atleast though :(

Master difficulty you say?

I don't think I'm going to lower the difficulty. This game is so badly balanced that playing it for a challenge isn't even possible - it's either absurdly difficult, or wildly easy, with very little of the solid gray area in-between. I would say that playing this for the RPG aspect is the way to go, but considering that this has no real RPG elements that wouldn't work. Or, at the very least, there is nothing to encourage the use of those RPG elements, and so it goes totally unfun.

I'm disappointed. I'm either raging every 10 minutes at some bandit who has 4000 health and one-hit kills me with his iron dagger, or completely bored, killing everything with extreme ease.

I use a sword and shield, and yet enemies still do enormous amounts of damage to me. I have to carry around stacks of health potions because I burn through them so quickly.

IMHO, a thief/sneak character should never find their self in a 2/3/4/5 on 1 scenario. They should be in a shadow, picking off whatever enemy gets away from their support. It takes time to play that way, but it makes things much easier.

I spent almost 2 Hours clearing a room last night that had 2 bandits, 2 bandit thugs, and a bandit chief in it. Got caught once with 3 still left, and it was a slaughter. Reloaded, sneaky bow shot, retreat around corner, set bear trap that was behind me, and wait for them to forget. Kill the weakest first, followed by the heavy hitters/long reachers(battle axe/hammers). Then the shield guys if you still have the patience, though I can 1v1 them pretty easy due to their lack of damage output.

A sword and a shield the only viable option? Really now.

I have an archer/assassin and dragons (so far) are the only thing that are more or less challenging.

Max out overdraw (Archery Perk)

Max out critical shot (Archery Perk)

Get Bullseye (Archery Perk, optional)

Get Deadly Aim (Sneak Perk)

Get some +% Bow damage gear.

All you gotta do is sneak around and shoot people from afar - I have yet to meet anything that gives me trouble, and that's while using a plain ebony bow with iron arrows.
