Can we equip our NPC followers/companions?

Yes. In the conversation options, there's a 'trade' things. Your companion will choose the best of whatever armor and arms you give her. She'll also carry a fair amount of loot. I imagine the guy companions behave the same way, unless they're of the 'women do all the work' persuasion.

Yah, long as it is 'better' they will equip it.

In my case I have a plate wearing follower that I wanted to have wear fur, cause I likes it.

Now in order to do that you have to remove gear not normally seen in trade. The hidden stuff.

Before you use showinventory I highly recommend you just do a normal trade to remove all the gear that way, that you can see in that mode.

To do that open the console and select the npc/companion

type

showinventory

you will now see a item list (with some odd errors that Skryim is using for some reason)

with base codes for the gear. So if you want to remove that 'ugly' plate just enter (while the npc/companion is selected )

removeitem (ID for the item here) 1 example removeitem 0001002 1 the 1 has to be there to remove at least 1 of the item. quantity value.

Alternativly if you just want to strip all the gear (and I'd be sure to remoe all i could with normal trade first)

you can just enter

removeallitems

that will strip ALL the gear into a null bucket. gone forever.

If you see a item on that npc you want to keep rather than just remove it forever you would first add it to your inventory

for safekeeping with

player.additem (base ID code) 1

then you can safely removeitem and have a back up copy to use on the npc/companion if you so desire.

Personally, i just make notes of the basecode id and if i want to put that item back on them I just add it via additem command.

Once this is done most NPC's wont' respawn that old default gear, however SOME will via some hidden scripts.

I do this for when I want to force a nearby npc or companion to wear some more attractive gear that has less attractive stats to them.

EDIT . I forgot to mention . if the item list scrolls off the console you can page up and down to

see the console text that scrolled off the screen.

hope that helps someone.

The problem is that removing their default gear makes them equip the new stuff, As soon as you leave the area and come back, you will see them wear nothing.

That has never been my experience in this game nor any prior game using this same engine.

My Lydia no longer has her default armor that was hidden.

She is wearing whatever I hand her. In my case it is some nice furs. All done now via trade window.

No issues with the armor disappearing and her being nude on zoneing or subsequent game loads.

I have no idea what happened in your case but that has never been my experience.

Is there a specific NPC in your case this applies to? Curious.

Yes my followers typically use the best item I have given them whether it be armor or weapons. NPC AI won't factor in chants or smithy upgrades so they base it on base Armor or Weapon damage only when the AI figures out what to use.

I have tried everyone in the Companion Guild and SwordMaiden. Well it's good that it works for you, hopefully when the new patch comes out it might fix it up for me.

hmm, companion guild you say?

Is your character a Werewolf? If so, maybe that has something to do with it. Or if the NPC's in question

can transform, they too would be subject to the issue. Any transformation like that is bound to have odd

script stuff attatched.

Just a idea .

My character is not in tight with the companions yet, no WW form.

Something is amiss that does not make sense and it has to be some unknown underlying script mechanic here

in Skryim.
