How to change Item Weight?

Good morning all! So, like many of you, I have been enjoying the HELL out of Skyrim, but I came across a few things that bugged me, namely the weight of the weapons. I know that this is a fantasy world, so perhaps that makes it okay, so I will not claim the developers are wrong or anything similar.

In real life, a sword like the "Iron Sword" would weigh approximately 3.5 pounds, MAYBE. Which is, if I recall the weight of a Dwarven Dagger. To me, this is a bit ridiculous, so I wanted to set about making a mod that adjusts the weight of weapons to their realworld counterparts. However, I have never modded for Oblivion or Skyrim before, and I am unsure of what all is involved and if this is something that can be tackled by a rookie.

So here are my questions:

1) What exactly is involved with adjusting item weights? Can this be done across the board, or would I have to edit every single unique item as well?

2) Is this a reasonable "first mod"?

Lastly, is there anyone else who would be interested in such a mod?

Cheers,

Komaru

1. It is relatively easy, but tedious ... if the system hasn't dramatically changed you will most likely be able to edit the weight of any item. But nope I doubt, that they will have anything that lets you edit every item at once. But what do you mean with every single unique item? Every iron sword is (at least in Oblivion) coming from one entry meaning change that one and you change every iron sword. How exactly they handle "iron sword of sparks" or stuff like that I don't know.

2. Not really it is a complete overhaul of every item in the world(should be several thousand) as well as some adjustments to the strength of your character, so the amount he can carry stays realistic. Naturally if you "only" change the weapons or armors then it becomes more doable but it would still be somewhere in the three digit amount of entries you would have to change I guess.

The weights in Skyrim aren't pounds, unless you can run around and fight zombies all day with 300 pounds on your back.

Editing weights, if Creation Kit is anything like GECK, is easy and a good introduction to item modding. However, you can't do it until there's a Creation Kit to work with. It's a simple matter of going through and changing one variable on each weapon. In Oblivion, unique items referenced mundane items - an obvious necessity because of the player's ability to create her own enchanted gear. I imagine that Skyrim will be similar, so you will not need to edit enchanted versions of mundane items.

ACtually, that brings up an interesting point! I hadn't considered that idea. Taking it into account, I have done some math.

2.8lb Sword = 10 weight units.

2.8/10 = .28

1 Weight Unit = .28lbs

I'm using the weight of a Viking Sword, rather than a longsword, as it is more similar to those found in Skyrim. From this, we now have a baseline to work with. When we plug those numbers into the calculator to find out how much their Steel Armor set weighs in pounds... (Taking into account Armor, Helmet, Gauntlets, Boots)

56 x .28 = 15.68lbs

Now, actual plate armor weighs in the range of 75-90lbs depending on who makes it and all.

So, I would have to rebalance everything. For a laugh, let's see what their idea of carrying capacity is.

300 x .28 = 84lbs. That's.... Not TOO bad, actually. According to my math, if you have 300 Carrying Capacity you could wear a suit of real plate armor, your sword, and perhaps a few more pounds of gear.

In conclusion, it would seem I would have to rebalance EVERYTHING, and I would probably just much things up more than they already are. So much for that idea, if there are any questions on the math, please feel free to ask.
