1st time PC modding

Recommended Posts

So I just got FONV for my PC because I've heard so many great things about it, ESPECIALLY after some mods are added to improve gameplay and combat. After some hunting online, I ended up following the directions on at www.gamersnexus.net/gg/1536-fallout-new-vegas-grapics-content-mod-overhaul/Page-4 to start my modding process. Seems simple, right? Well...

  • I got NMM installed in the same folder as my Steam FONV game files. Same for the Script Extender.
  • All the mods in the list above were located and downloaded successfully using NMM (minus a couple I didn't want to use).
  • Half of the mods were "installed/activated", but the other half are just "queued" and haven't shown any downloading progress in over 14 hours.
  • Specifically all of the mods and files associated with Project Nevada were installed, but when the window opened to check my options, it wouldn't let me select the "Cyberware" option because the file doesn't exist? There isn't a Cyberware-only file on the Nexus site that I can find, though. Also, next to the installation status of all Project Nevada files is the message "mod not activated".

Honestly, I'm just a little lost. The directions I have are slightly vague and (of course) a little outdated with some of the mod versions, and I'm not exactly sure where to manually place files for things like NMM, Script Extender, FNV4GB, etc., so who knows if that's what's causing my problems. Does anyone know how I can solve the issues I'm experiencing above, or can guide me to a helpful source to better understand what I'm doing?

I know this is about as much of a newb post as anyone can make, and I really appreciate your patience and time. Thank you!

First of all, if you are using NMM to download and install so many mods at once that you are getting them "queued" you are heading for disaster before you even start. The "queuing" is on the server side and not something anyone else can help with. You just have to wait. If you think you have an NMM problem, then check out their NMM wiki and forum.

You can download without installing, which is recommended when you are initially getting started. Just use the "Manual download" button instead.

See this article, written with people like you in mind. I am not saying the guide you are using is wrong; it just is not meaning to imply "download and install all of these at once and expect no problems". No guide is going to completely replace reading the documentation that accompanies each mod. You are going to have to take time and do a lot of reading. Resign yourself to it. Either now or later. Just please accept the hard won lessons learned of those who have gone before and take the time before you invest in the game just to have it blow up in your face.

The good news is that there are a lot of resources available to help you get a solid, stable game up and going.

As for "Project Nevada", there are several files you need that are not on the main download page.

The "cyberware" is part of the "Extra Options".

More than likely you are also going to need the "patches" to get PN to work with other popular mods. Other mods may have patch files on their own download pages for PN as well.

A simple Nexus search on "Project Nevada" turns up two pages of mods related to it.

The simple rule for "where to install mods" is "under the game's 'Data' folder", UNLESS instructed otherwise. In all cases, read the instructions first.

NVSE goes under the Data folder.

FNV4GB goes in the game "root" folder: i.e. "<path to steam>\steamapps\common\Fallout New Vegas".

As for NMM, have you seen Gopher's excellent "Beginner's Guide" series video? Just mentally substitute "FNV" wherever he refers to "Skyrim".
