Rodjama
How many players here actually try and RP their characters properly within the mechanics of FO4? What I'm getting at here is do you place limitations or parameters on your characters build when starting out and consciously avoid specific perks when leveling up so as to create challenging game play? I'm doing this now with my current character's play through, that is I avoid picking perks that change damage dealt and received for example. The only exception to this is if your character interacts with a skill magazine. Something which is kinda hard to avoid until you pick it up. Also, my character is not taking on followers at all unless specified in a quest for its completion and character avoids using power armor. I have a power armor suit ready to go but so far, that is to lvl 28, have had no need to use it yet.All this is done on 'Hard' difficulty, so far, but I've been thinking though, maybe I should have done this on default difficulty instead because it can get frustrating when your shooting with a crafted up combat shot gun at raiders in the head with no head amour and they take quite a few shots to get down, this is practically at point blank range too... hmmm... lol,,, One way to increase offensive power is with specific perks in crafting or in the case of melee attack, adding points to strength, but obviously crafting will scale with any type of gun according to what level your characters on. It will make you think more about strategy and resource management to say the least.. but nonetheless having a great time with this concept.. :nuke: In a broader sense this is what I use to do in Skyrim a lot, challenge myself by creating characters that play in unorthodox ways.. Who else tries to do stuff like this? TeamBacon
My character was very under powered through the entire early game. I picked my SPECIAL stats and perks purely to scavenge and scrounge anything and everything from around the world. I basically took on the idea that I had woken up in this strange new future and I was trying to gather together all the resources possible to help me survive. So I grabbed up lockpick and hacker ranks as soon as possible, then strong back to carry more loot, as well as anything that helped me scrap items or pick up more ammo or get discounts when I went to stores. One I got a high enough level to start unlocking the more advanced building skills, however, I was able to use all the stuff I had hoarded to build some top notch guns. From that point on the game became a lot easier. I still get 1 shot killed all the time because my endurance is 2 and I don't wear any armor. But I can also 1 shot kill most of my enemies with my overpowered weapons. I don't wear power armor because it makes the game go from frustratingly difficult to the most insanely easy thing ever in a matter of 3 seconds. Also I would rather hoard those fusion cores in case I need them for one of my Gatling lasers.
TheGadget1945
When I got the game in January I had never played any of the Fallout series before so I was pretty much thrown in at the deep end like the Vault Dweller. I didn't have a clue about which weapons to use and found the interface very clunky compared to Far Cry 4 so I mainly relied on the Super Sledge and a baseball bat with circular saw blades either side. I have to say that it was a lot more fun than using the overpowered weapons. As for power armor I got sick of it early on and have about 20+ suits dumped in various places not including one that a caravan guard stole. As with TeamBacon Fusion Cores are mainly for Gatling Lasers now. void666
What i like to do is create a new game with alternate start, set a level cap. Use alternate start settings to give me level 30 or use console commands to a set level. Sometimes 50. Choose SPECIAL and perks based on chosen backstory.I'm not sure which level is ideal. I want to be able to be effective in combat but i want to be forced to make choices. To specialize instead of being good at everything. That's what's lacking in vanilla FO4.I like that without being the god of weapon crafting it's actually exciting to loot corpses and find that perfect roll. Boombro
My last have been a weak but good with robotics and power armor. I would only fight with power armor using big weaponry, when i don't have it, I do my best to not sneak out, but run away from everything. It was fun as hell. Early game was a nightmare. Sneaking into raider camps to steal cores, run whole map when anything attacks me etc End game was crazy, I had a whole robot city. 'm not sure which level is ideal. I want to be able to be effective in combat but i want to be forced to make choices. To specialize instead of being good at everything. You can do that tamer and robot export style. Ended the game with both and reached end game just fine. Standing and doing nothing was kind of boring however.
CyrusAmell
I like to role play my character as a sort of Tony Stark - heck, with max Intelligence, Armorer, Blacksmith, Gun Nut, Robotics and Science! you basically are Tony Stark. The Male Sole Survivor is a little easier to fill in I find. Especially for my Institute guy, I pretend that he attended CIT before being convinced by those gaudy posters in the cafeteria that it was his duty to serve his country as a soldier. So declining a job offer from none other than Mr. House, the MSS joins the military as a front-line engineer and takes part in a number of important battles in Alaska. Coming back home, he was planning on either starting up his own company or seeing if Mr. House wouldn't still want to hire him. He just has to attend that Veteran's Convention today. Rodjama
Thanks for the comments above, some interesting points indeed. One thing I've come to learn in Bethseda RP/Action games , is that your character does not have to beat or destroy every enemy that gets in the way. Good old fashioned "running away to fight another day" is and can be fun, not too mention that if the character hasn't found every location on the map, often running away in a random direction in order to escape quickly aka "Panic" until your AP is drained can make the character discover new places. In building up this current character, perks to aid AP regeneration come in mighty handy... lol.. :)Sometimes unexpected things can happen and bring new twists in discovering the FO4 world. This is one of the reasons why these games have so much replay ability, even with minimal or no mods. Its all in the creativity of adventuring.

I added a twit by making my thief only fight as werewolf in my third run since i had mode that added a dungeon that was combat heavy.
PoliteRaider
Yeah, this is how I'll usually play. I've just been playing through with a 'cowboy' character who only uses pistols (VATS and criticals based build), doesn't usually use power armor (unless needed for radiation protection) and doesn't make robots with automatron. I'm around level 50 now though and started to get a little bored of it, so I'm starting to plan a new character to play with. I'm actually really tempted to try a pacifist character, or at least as much as is possible in Fallout 4. It's tricky, but it'll be something I haven't really done before so it could be fun. If I'm doing anything that nearly always gets my character killed, then I'll rethink my strategy first. I neglected to mention in my first post, that I have only deposited 3 luck and 3 Charisma into the character's build and haven't put any more points in them since, the rest of the points were spread out pretty much even among the other S.P.E.C.I.A.L classes when starting out. I've gotta say, roaming around the FO4 world with low luck makes scavenging more adventurous... lol... or else your character misses out on stuff  Edited July 8, 2016 by Rodjama
