kuro1n
Havent tried to mod skyrim myself yet but you would need some kind of BSA extractor as well as a program to work the images with, iex. Photoshop. Doubt theres any tutorials though.
Byzanthium
I'm interested in doing this as well. I've only used G.E.C.K. and the Construction Set, but I haven't attempted to retexture or recolor armor before. I have FOMM and have extracted the .dds files and opened them in GIMP, but I'm a little weary of actually doing anything with them since I'm unsure of what I'm doing. How do I recolor certain areas of the armor? Do I just use the paint brush tool and color over the area? Won't this cover up the present texture? How do I recolor the area without destroying the texture?
kuro1n
Never used gimp but mark the area you wish to recolor, start coloring, use different types of layers etc then fix the edges perhaps, save it out in the correct map and try it ig. I guess? Its like doing any texture. Oo Once we can get ahold of the models i guess you could import it in photoshop and 3d paint it if you wish to work that way instead. NeoG
You can do anything to the texture you want, as long as you don't change the geometry and location of the peices on a canvas, otherwise it will move on the model too (for worse) You are really asking more along the lines of how to use a graphics program, importing and exporting DDS is about the only game-related task you need to do.. You can start basic by selecting a certain area of a texture, and copying it to a new layer. The hue/sat/lum tool is the easiest way to change the base colour, once you find a colour you like, then erase parts of the new layer you want to show through as the old colour Then re-save as DDS using an appropriate 8bpp DXT format (if you have lots of VRAM you can export to 8.8.8 RGB for max quality), and move the file to the right folder (E.G. skyrim\textures\actors\character\femalebody.dds) The new colours should show up next time you start the game
Aluminumfoil
In GIMP, select the Paintbrush Tool. Select the color you want the armor to be. Set the Mode to Color and the Opacity to a value of your choice. I'd recommend around 10-20%. Alternately, select the Free Select Tool and draw around the section you want to color. Use the Hue Saturation Tool and mess around with the values of your selection until you get a color you like. Shantih
There is also Paint.NET which is free and very easy to use.
Byzanthium
Thanks for the tips. I'll give all the suggestions a try to see which gives the results I'm looking for. Cheers! Edited November 18, 2011 by Byzanthium
arknor1050
you need fallout mod tools to extract the bsa and a dds plugin to load the texture in photoshop or gimp. check my post history for links and exactly how you do it
metalmatt
An easy way to just "recolor" a texture is to use an overlay brush. In GIMP or Photoshop when you select the brush you have a drop down menu of brush types with the default on normal. Overlay sort of masks the base image in the color you paint. Also play with the opacity.
