I have the same problem, even with the darkness setting at lowest, its the monitor I use and assume its the same for you. Torches and night eye are totally unnecessary, and the atmosphere is lacking. I've played Skyrim on a massive plasma screen(which handles contrast much better) and it is perfect. Just not on my monitor.

Here is a makeshift solution I have found...

Go to > Documents > My games > Skyrim > and open/edit your SkyrimPrefs.ini (make sure its not read only)

About 20 lines from the top find "fGamma=1.8500" (this allows you to adjust the brightness beyond the scale of the ingame slider)

Adjust this setting, save then test how you like it and adjust.

I find setting the value to 1.8500 to be about right on my screen. Increments of 0.1 seem to fine tune it.

Looks much better, although the solution is not perfect as the contrast is not balanced this way, it does improve things a great deal.

+1 for a proper darker nights mod, along with better torch lighting effects!!!

I want darker nights too. I see nearly no difference between day n night,

especially clouded nights without stars or moon light are much to bright, this should be really dark.

Some special night effects would be cool too,

like some patches of fog creeping on the ground

or sounds of crickets and owls and of course

a lone wolf howling in the distance.

That would be a perfect dream for Skyrims nature.:)

I hope there will be some good mod soon.

+1

Without Light it should be Dark, specialy in Dungeons, also nice would be a dense fog (maybe as weather feature or in some special areas).
