Problem with modified beret

I 'ported the 1st recon beret into Blender and removed the patch area of the mesh. Exported the mesh to a new named .nif and applied a new texture in GECK. But when I try to put the beret on, instead of appearing on the head it's showing up sideways on the side of the head.

For the life of me I can't find any differences in the 2 berets that would cause this change. Someone please gift me a clue here.
