If all you are finding is gloves and boots, and your smithing is high enough, you could just melt those down and make some armor or a helmet. My friend and I were discussing the realism behind it too. What happens when you recycle an aluminum can? They certainly don't make butter out of them. So, the ability to smelt armor pieces into at least 1 ingot of their respective material would be nice.
