Game Crash at certain locations.

Hi, so this has been an ongoing problem for many years for me, but gave up trying to fix it and have only been playing Skyrim on consoles since. Now that the "new" Skyrim is coming out I wanted to migrate back to PC Modded again rather than having to buy the "new" version when it comes out.

So the problems are as follows and has plagued me for years:

Crashes occur in the following locations:

Whiterun - Interior Cells, (More Often Bannered Mare)

Windhelm - Anywhere, including exterior.

Solitude - Anywhere, including exterior.

Weird camera Glitch where it jumps back and forth between two positions whilst preventing me from moving whilst the game is still running, eventually leads to a crash after a couple of seconds.

Another thing that would be great to have some insight on, is that whenever in corners of interiors or dungeons, there is a LOT of camera juttering whilst sill at 60FPS.

My current Rig is as follows:

Running Windows 10

CPU: i7 6700K 4.0GHz

Motherboard: MSI Gaming M7

Graphics Card: Sapphire Tri-x Vapor-x 290x (4GB)
RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2400MHz

HDD: Seagate Hybrid 2TB

SSD: Sandisk 128GB

Running the lastest Game Version, Legendary Edition, Latest SKSE[skyrim Script Extender], Using NMM[Nexus Mod Manager] (Latest), FNIS[Fores New Idles] 6.3, and LOOT[Load Order Optimisation Tool].

The Tutorial stickied to this Forum on how to get a LOOT log doesnt work, at least not for me. If anyone could point me in the right direction for that, it would be much appreciated. But for now, I will manually type my load order into this spoiler.

These problems have been occurring for years. On 2 different PCs. I have tried reinstalling, I have tried playing without mods, I have tried reinstalling Steam, I have tried different Graphics Cards, I have updated all of my drivers.

Any form of insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

<These problems have been occurring for years. On 2 different PCs. I have tried reinstalling, I have tried playing without mods, I have tried reinstalling Steam, I have tried different Graphics Cards, I have updated all of my drivers.>

Here is a list of things you may do if you want results in term of stability.

/// Cleaning and correcting potential bugs :

  • Install USLEEP > v 3.0.4 now you have installed Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Patch.esp and it should be Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch.esp, that makes me think you don't have the latest.
  • Clean your master files to eliminate potential problems.: Gopher's videos cleaning your masterfiles on the Nexus Tesedit page.
    Start Tes5edit, simply untick everything, (right-click/select none) and add only a tick to the esm/esp you want to check + update.esm, Tesedit knows what to do and will load all the dependencies automatically.
    - Begin with loading only Skyrim + update, ITM / UDR + save ctrl +s and close.
    - Then load Skyrim + update + Dawnguard, ITM / UDR + ctrl +s and close.
    - Then load Skyrim + update + Hearthfire, ITM / UDR + ctrl +s and close.
    - Then load Skyrim + update + Dragonborn, ITM / UDR + ctrl +s and close.
  • The method above can be used to clean mods. In your case the Undelete and Disable Reference, (UDR) can spare you some CTDs. If I'm correct LOOT should tells you which plugin you should clean.

/// Load order / mods conflicts : this one is the most important

/// Settings / memory :

  • Have you installed the skse patch or SSME ? (don't install both...) >> memory blocks log.
  • Backup your ini files and delete the files. Skyrim.ini / SkyrimCustom.ini / SkyrimPrefs.ini found in C:\Users\Utilisateur\Documents\My Games\Skyrim then use your vanilla launcher to autodetect and use best settings for your computer.

/// Save game :

/// Meshes healer :

  • Read here, this is potentially a cause of CTD that you can resolve by following the mod procedure on this page.

/// Useful informations : about your crashes in interior /exterior cells, read the CTD troubleshooting pages.

Good luck

Thank you very much for your insight and helpful tips, there were some tricks in this list I never knew to do. However that being said after going through each step, the problem still persists. However, I seem to be crashing less in the above locations and now in more remote places such as Ivarstead. I am now resorting to, wiping the game (again) and seeing if this will fix the issue. Might have to go deeper into the Mods installed.

<Might have to go deeper into the Mods installed>

You simply may have mods that edit the same places and conflict or some may also have UDR.

  • You may load all your mods with Tes5edit and use the (right-click in the left pane) apply filter to show conflict losers. Wait till Tes5edit has finished. Caution : don't try to modify anything while using this filter, it's not intended for.
  • In the left pane, Expand the subsections and examine conflicts. Once an entry is expanded to the bottom and selected, the right pane shows which mods modify the entry. The last one on the right is the last loaded in your load order and the conflict winner.
  • Expand the following subsections, depending on where the problems occur. Cells for CTDs inside buildings, grottos, etc... and worldspace for exterior. The goal is to target mods that edit the same places and conflict. Open the bloc note and write those mods.
  • Once done, close Tes5edit and open each mod with Tesedit, one by one and use the UDR cleaning procedure (Gopher's videos cleaning your masterfiles on the Nexus Tesedit page) to ensure all the deleted references will be transformed in disabled references = no CTDs from this point. May be LOOT can tell you that but I'm not sure.
  • If you suspect a mod in particular, using the conflict looser / winner method above, you can decide to change its load order or uninstall it.

This can help to get rid of some of your CTDs. Good luck.

Locational crashes or issues tend to be a problem related to either mods that effect game assets board due to corruption of the asset files

the issue that you run into seems to be related to the installs and it is best if you entirely delete all files rather than overwriting the past installation. The files just get a bunch of garbage floating around with them.

I really prefer mod organizer because it does a virtual install and you are able to quickly swap to your new installation.

It also sounds like you have a mod or two that are creating issues as well.

Ok, so after going through every step again. Nothing, however going through and filtering my Mods 1 by 1 its seems to be ANYTHING to do with Clothing. Rustic Clothing was causing the huge amount of crashes in interiors such as Solitude and Inns. After turning this Mod off, the crashes are now significantly less in those cells. But the main crashes are still happening, just walking around and zip straight to black and desktop, no report, no error, nothing. Another thing that is currently happened, I started off in Riften and started the Thieves Guild Questline. Went through the first couple of Missions such as Goldenglow, going in and out of the Main Gate constantly to reach the locations. After completing Goldenglow I am heading outside to reach the Carriage to Whiterun. I can no longer leave Riften AT ALL. Crash through Main Gate, or any gates leading outside. Fast Travelling, and use of console also produce the same result too ANY location. I have no idea what to do at this point...

Well you probably have a couple more mods that you need to go through, and do more extensive testing.

I did not see where you are using ENB boost I would imagine when you properly apply that using the STEP Wiki info you will solve most of the rest of the issues. This should straighten out the rest of your memory allocation issues if you properly implement it.

You have uninstalled mods ? Try the savescripts cleaner linked above.

Yeah, I used the Script Cleaner. Once again going through the Mods, Superior Lore Friendly Hair Rextexture was uninstalled and now Riften works again. I am beyond confused at how Hair Textures would stop Riften from working...
