Elec1
So yeah I got some Skooma for this guy in Windhelm from the Dark Elf bar and I didn't get caught. However later when I was in solitude, these uber-powerful guys with enchanted weapons no less attacked me. The first two times I tried they killed me pretty quickly no matter what tactics I used. The third time, I ran for the city assuming the guards would give me a hand since I didn't have any bounty or anything but they just ran away! WTF?! Finally I just gave in and used the console to tun on god mode just to be able to continue the game without getting my ass handed to me no matter what! And when I finally killed the bastards, I found a note on them and it turned out the owner of the bar had somehow known that I had stolen his damn skooma (which was just collecting dust under the stairwell btw) even though I KNEW that I had remained undetected while stealing it. So yeah. Basically stealing something while undetected can put you in a worse situation than being caught stealing and going to jail, for now we not only have psychic guards to worry about, we have psychic NPCs as a whole! I'm not sure if this can be accomplished without the help of the creation kit but... can someone please make a mod that can remove these hired thugs as soon as possible? kitsuneshoujo
What I want to know is, HOW does the owner know we stole something from them?! Talk about god-modding... sheesh.I stole some steel from the blacksmith in Riverwood a few nights ago and then BAM! yesterday I had thugs try to kill me. There was NO guards around, there was a chicken sleeping near the road, AND It was 4.30 am. HOW the hell did he know it was me?! Was the chicken a surveillance camera or something..?! Also the hired thugs are not unbeatable. I had three guys on me, 2 with shields and sword one with a 2hander. I took down the two-hander first then the shield users went down pretty easily. I was dual-wielding axes.
Elec1
Did they have enchanted weapons? Eh I guess I just need to learn to dodge better... though a better idea would be to not have god-modders for NPCs.
kitsuneshoujo
I dont remember if they do now or not. I dont want to say that they did or didnt, because I dont remember. Id rather have a mod that prevents npcs from tossing out wild accusations... or at the very LEAST have a continuation from the contract. Like a confrontation, or maybe get an apology. WarpCrow
Yeah, it seems sometimes someone just magically senses that you've stolen from them, and while you never incur a bounty, they still hire some thugs to hunt you down. In my case I stole some ingots off the porch of the blacksmith in Riverwood in the dead of night, with nobody watching, and later met a group of heavily armed and armored mercenaries near Whiterun who had been hired by him to 'teach me a lesson' for it.. They didn't kill me, but they were the most powerful humanoids I had fought up to that point. To be fair, theft is otherwise a bit OP and too easy to get away with, but psychic property owners hiring seasoned veterans on the cheap is a bit jarring to the realism factor. Bearget
From an immersion perspective, I don't agree with the complaints. If you were to come to my house and steal something, and I didn't see you do it but I *did* know you'd been there... well then of course when I eventually notice something's missing I'm going to assume you're the one who took it. Personally I love the implication that the NPCs do actually have some awareness of their surroundings. Not that I'm suggesting there aren't any holes in the system, of course. Presumably the blacksmith has plenty of people walking by each day, how does he know you're the one who stole from him? Maybe everyone else he sees is a local, so he just assumed the one stranger he saw must be the culprit - but even if that's the case, how did he know your name? Or, more importantly, where to send the thugs to find you? I mean, I don't know where I'm going half the time, how could some NPC with a grudge? And finally, I really think it shouldn't happen unless the item (or sum of items) you stole is actually relatively valuable, because you're exactly right that hiring professional hitmen to track down someone who stole a couple of iron ingots from you is tad psychotic. Nonetheless, I stand by my initial statement: I think it's a really nifty feature, one of those little details that makes the world feel more alive. I say, rather than getting rid of it entirely, just tweak it so they only show up if you stole something big, and so that they're maybe a bit less overpowered. Rebelicious
Same thing happened to me, the second I reached Whiterun meadery, in the beginning of the game, coming straight out of Riverwood at around level 10. True goddamn insanity. I had to cheese it out to survive, by having them get stuck in world geometry while I pelted them with arrows. What idiot thought that this would be a good idea should be fired.
Elec1
I actually agree with Bearget that it adds to the immersion factor but it also adds to the misery of the player. Why are they so powerful and how is it that even the poorest of villagers can afford to hire such elite thugs? So yeah I'd like a mod that removes them or at least nerfs them.
