cmac
You must first cast a spell of SOul trap at the target whose soul you wish to entrap. Then kill the target. The soul will be sucked into the smallest soul gem available. NPC's, vampires, and static objects have no souls and cannot be Soul trapped. Dagoth Ur also has a 0 soul value and cannot be Soul Trapped.
MajKrAzAm
The best way to soul trap is to use the short blade souldrinker, it casts soul trap when you hit them and when you kill the creature the spell captures it soul. :D -MajKrAzAm
loveme4whoiam
:Slight hijack, but on the exact same topic ;) . Does Soul Trap have a variable in it? ie, can it fail to be cast, like the other spells. Its never happened to me but i thought it might be possible if you had low fatigue or MP. cmac
Yes, SoulTrap spells can fail casting. Obviously, without magicka, or low fatigue, casting is difficult or impossible. Enchanted weapons with SOultrap are very useful, because it elimenates the chances of missing with the spell.
loveme4whoiam
No, i meant that once you've cast the spell (and they have the purple mist floating around them) can it fail to bring the message "You have trapped a soul" and all that stuff? cmac
No, unless you do not have a soul gem big or small enough to contain the soul properly.
Stormscape
SoulTrap will ALWAYS work if you have a big enough soul gem (PS: A use for Cliffracers: practicing enchant skill by using them to recharge stuff)
