heavyshooter
How do you edit textures in skyrim? what program do you use to extract the textures, what files are they? I guess you can edit them with photoshop? I'm completely lost, can someone show me the right direction?
Rennn
Gimp is a great free program to edit textures, but you'll probably also want to either download the Gimp dds module, or download a converter like the DDS Converter 2.1. I haven't tested anything yet, but apparently you can take a .dds texture, convert it to a bitmap with DDS Converter, edit it with Gimp, then convert it back to a .dds. Gimp is actually pretty user-friendly with all sorts of tools that make your work much easier. I'm new at modding as well, so hopefully I'm not leaving something out. heavyshooter
But how do I get the textures from the game?
SquallV
Please, I also would like to know this. I'm brand new to modding Skyrim, so I've been trying to find tutorials for texture modding, but I cant find anything. All I find are sites telling me where to download mods. I want to make my own. 1) How do I get the textures out of the game? I already am an experienced Photoshop user, so I don't need help there. I've modded textures for Tomb Raider with Texmod. I even know how to work with .dds files. Texmod works with Skyrim, but I guess I'm just tired of using it. And besides, no one else seems to know what Texmod is. 2) How do I get the textures back into the game? I know it has something to do with the Data folder. I've seen some texture mods that all you have to do is place their folder inside the data folder. How do I do that with my own mods? JDFan
For Question #1 ---The FO3archive Utility can be used to extract the files from the BSA files used for Skyrim -- just follow the directions for using it but use the Skyrim BSA file instead of the FO3 BSA. For question #2 -- currently you can only replace textures by naming them the same as the originals (Once Nifskope is updated and released (there is a beta going now I believe but not sure how to get it yet) you will be able to change the pathing inside the NIFs but for now just place the files in your Data folder in the same folder structure as the original texture and the game willl use your replacement instead of the ones in the BSA.
