ThoughtShift
Hello everyone I am new to the Nexus Forums and I was hoping someone could give me a hand. First off, I'd like to start off by saying I am new to PC gaming in general as I have been a console gamer for many years. I just recently made the transition to PC gaming once I could afford to have a good enough PC built. I heard all the stories about how Fallout: New Vegas is much better on PC due to mod support and with it being my favorite video game I was eager to try it out. So after looking into it, I downloaded Nexus Mod Manager and began browsing the different mods. I watched a few videos on YouTube of people's top recommended mods for beginners. Using Nexus Mod Manager I downloaded a few recommended mods such as Project Nevada and The Mod Configuration Menu to start out with. I then began looking into texture mods and found NMC's Texture Pack (Large 3 Part Version). This is where I began to run into a bit of a problem. The texture pack says it recommends that you download the mod "4GB Fallout New Vegas Updated" in order to have enough room to run it. After taking a look at it I saw that you could not download it using the Nexus Mod Manager and must download it manually. I really want to run the highest definition of this Texture Pack in order to have the best experience as my PC should be able to handle it. I looked around the web and watched some videos on how to successfully manually download the mod but I absolutely don't understand how to do it correctly. As I said, I'm new to PC gaming and I'm not very fluent when it comes to setting stuff like this up. I would very much appreciate if someone could slowly take me through the steps of how to get it downloaded and running properly where I can understand. Thanks in advance.~ThoughtShift
dubiousintent
Welcome to the exciting and frustrating world of mod playing. It's great to see you have been trying to do things "right" by researching. But I'm here to warn you there are some severe "gotcha's" waiting in store if all you do is follow are some "top mods" guidelines. Most do not go into how to properly build up your "install order" and "load order", so I strongly suggest you do some more reading and consider starting over with your mod installation. Plan on taking at least a week to get a stable game setup before playing "for real". Start with the wiki article "FNV General Mod Use Advice". This was written with someone in exactly your situation in mind. IT contained links to other articles that will lead you through everything you need to know, including a couple of articles with step by step mod setup and installation instructions. But without a proper foundation you going to run into trouble because you didn't understand what was behind some of that advice. As for FNV4GB, manual downloading is as easy as just clicking on the "manual" button. But you will need an "archive unpacker" that can handle the downloaded archive file type. The Nexus standard is "7Zip", which is "freeware" and can deal with all the common archive types. Download "7Zip", and install it like any other program. When it asks about "file associations" let make all the changes it wants. Your manually download files are going to be placed in your browser's default download folder unless you point it elsewhere (i.e. where NMM usually saves files, though best not in this instance). Usually the default download folder is your "C:\Users\<YourAccountNam>\Downloads" folder. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to that folder, and <right-click> your mouse on the FNV4GB archive file. This will popup a "context menu" which will have "7Zip" with a "right-pointing triangle" at the edge in a list of options. Move your cursor to the "right-pointing triangle" and another "context menu" will popup. This will contain various "7Zip" options. "Extract" the content to another folder. (I find it a good practice to have an "Addons" folder associated with the game for such, as in "FNV\Addons" placed somewhere but not under the actual game folder.) With FNV4GB extracted, read the accompanying documentation "ReadMe" file and follow the instructions carefully. When you need additional help, just come back here and ask. (I keep my eye out for people needing help.) -Dubious- [Edit for typos and clarity.] Edited July 23, 2016 by dubiousintent
