When placing a pack-in, how to select it so the whole pack-in is selected instead of picking out single parts?

Good question. Since everything comes in selected, I think your only option is to do everything you can not to DEselect them until you've got it where you want it. While that bunch of objects is initially selected, though, you could create a Group (right click menu), and ungroup them when you get the whole thing placed.

 

I will usually drop a Pack-In somewhere outside the map bounds, where I can drag select, then adjust things before dragging them into place.
