Crash in vault 101 atrium

I have decided to attempt to get the game to work (normally) again as it did the first time I used it when I had a cd.

for dxdiag info on my current machine (which will be referred to as super hermit cave from this point forward) see attachment

basic info:

Windows 10 pro 64 bit

CPU : Intel i7 6700k @ 4.00 Ghz

GPU: EVGA Nvidia GTX 1080 FTW

RAM: 16 gb DDR4 Kingston HyperX Fury

Fallout is installed outside of program files on a hard disk separate from the os drive

Version:

Steam GOTY

dlc active

Mods:

none

Where:

In vault 101 on the part where you escape right after you go past stanley the robot and the vault security officer and enter the room where there are two vault security officers with pistols that shoot the two vault residents (the atrium)

"fallout 3 has stopped working"

happens when I enter the atrium.

  • first time happened when the male vault resident ran at the officers saying "hey it's me"
  • second time happened as I was moving to see the doorway the officers were at

Reproducibility: ridiculous

I have had this problem on three computers and three/four operating systems

OS I have tried on:

  • Windows XP Professional 32 bit
  • WIndows 7 Home 64 bit
  • Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
  • Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

Non-exhaustive list of fixes that have been tried through all of those machines Bold items are ones that I have done on super hermit cave.

  1. FALLOUT.ini fix for quad+ core cpus
  2. Installing the unofficial fallout patch + FOSE
  3. 4gb patch on fallout exe
  4. installed k-lite audio codec mega pack
  5. doing this (looking for evil codecs): http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/897990-codec-investigation-project/page-7?do=findComment&comment=15382057 (disbaleing all codecs failed to solve crash)
  6. activating/ updating .net framework though Turn Windows features on or off
  7. turning off antialiasing and anisotropic filtering

Other notes (for super hermit cave - my current machine):

  • Auto Save is not off, however I never loaded and autosave while experiencing this.
  • DLC are active becuse in past tests disabling them had no effect

Curious notes from playtime on a computer i installed windows xp on hoping it would fix issues

If you need anymore information just tell me

actually i know that's not the problem becuse everytime I launch the game windows gives me a notification to tell me it's not compatible with this version, and if I click on it it gives me the same installer (which allowed me to get the the main menu)

I wish it was that simple

The windows 10 Nag screen is false, the game is fully compatible in windows ten.

I am a tech, I know about things you don't, IF you do not upgrade the Windows For live software, it will never become compatible ever.

It is your choice, if you knew what the problem was, why ask for help?

The upgraded Direct x code that this program installs was made for windows 10 systems so you CAN run these games.

but...you have the choice , I can't force you to do anything you do not believe is correct. I wish you all the luck anyway.

what i meant is:

If i understand it correctly, fallout 3 wont run without gfwl - I did not have that at first and my game did not launch. then i clicked on the windows nag which gave me a download for gfwl, i installed it. The game launched and ran fine until the problem described in the OP happend

I can provide video if necessary.

sorry for the misunderstanding, I should have been more clear.

install this, open it after you set things up. drop down Tools and install the tweaker "fake live.dll"

run the game.

OR if you wish NOT to use that program, copy the files in it's data folder, all 3 xlive related to the root game folder and run the game.

ok i tried that, still crash in the same spot

Please send me your current saved game file. I want to see what's in it.

"Are you running FOSE ?.." you should not be. Not on a fresh start.

This is strictly for Diagnostic purposes.

What I will do.

  1. IF retail game? I'll set one up just for you under your nexus name here.
  2. IF Steam ? I'll set up an Entire steam assembly just for you and download the game fresh...start to finish.
  3. I will Isolate any data I find and post it here what I find.

Above quote: this is a known problem, Over thinking a default issue, this indicates a frustrated installation.

I'll try like hell to explain things to you. IF you have 7z archiving tools installed? copy the games Engine to the desk top.

rename it so it reads (1Fallout3.exe) right click it and use 7z to extract it to a folder of it's own from the menu extras as "1fallout3.exe" Note what 7z does and say's about that. Does it show you the file is "Broken? " It should because you used

(4gb patch on fallout exe) on it.

#1, you broke the main game engine.

#2 replace it by deleting it and refresh your steam game.

#3 Leave all the game file normal, leave the quad core fix's to the devil, Do NOT edit anything.

Diagnosis of these kinds of problems requires known default structures, no body here can guess what might be wrong.

Last, where is that game installed @ ?

After doing all of that, and I find nothing wrong ? I'll post instructions to get around what ever glitch you have I'll even attempt to make you a known Good patch to try and remove what ever bug sits there.
