video card VRAM not registering correctly?

Recommended Posts

For about 2 months now I have had a 6950 2gb MSI FROZR installed on my computer, and I sometimes you a program called "can you run it." Now it always comes back with saying that my video card only has 751 mb of VRAM. I through this off as a fluke for a while seeing as how that site isn't exactly the most reliable. However recently I decided to check my dxdiag because I have an identical computer to my friend (I picked out the components and built both of our computers) and yet I have serious lag and issues with most games that we both play. And he says he does not have the issues. These issues range from anything like very low FPS in games like Fallout and Skyrim, to very low FPS or horrible stutter in a game like Borderlands. Now to be clear, I am not sure I am actually looking at my VRAM in the dxdiag. Specifically it says "Approximate Total Memory: 751 MB"

I am assuming that VRAM is what it is referring too. Catalyst Vision Engine Control Center says I have 2048 MB's under my 6900 Hardware settings. So does that read what is currently working or just what the internet has to say about my card?

Also, wouldn't the entire GPU fail to work as a whole if that much VRAM were not working? What is dxdiag and can you run it referring too?

I don't believe its relevant but in the event it is here are my specs:

1100T Hex Core @ 3.7ghz

6950 2gb @810mhz

6gb's patriot RAM @ 800mhz (there are 3 sticks of two, and two of the sticks are at 612mhz I believe while one is at 800, and I think scaling down to meet the other two)

Gigabyte 770T-USB3 Mobo Rev 1.3

Windows 7 64 bit home premium

I am starting to believe that I may have gotten better all around performance when I had my my gtx 460 1 GB...

Check for a driver update. I used the Can I run it site which is not the most reliable. It said I had 2gb of vram with my crossfire 6970m (x2 2gb), and after updating from the really buggy first release drivers the site told be I was at the full amount. The old drivers also caused my computer to have a ton of problems, so it would be worth checking for an update. Good luck, and I hope you get your problem resolved.

I am on the current video card drivers. I think if I roll back to 10.9 it may get it right.

You can give it a try. Best of luck to you, and hopefully a roll back will work. Sorry help out much, you have an irregular problem  . I looked around and many people were saying that they also had 751 MB readings with dxdiag (always wrong with new amd cards apparently). Check what your CCC settings are at. If you have something odd like x16 aa and 64 tessellation on in both your control center and the game things will get really slow (and look unnaturally smooth  ). I tried all of that with team fortress 2 and took like a 150+ fps hit. Still playable, but not nearly as fluid.

Thanks for the help, I rolled back and it still said the same thing. I am thinking that because others have said this as well for dxdiag, and the "can you run it" is unreliable as it is, this may just be a small bug and nothing to worry about it. CCC still says I have 2048MB's of free VRAM on my card and WEI comes back with the same.
