Need to upgrade my comuter

Recommended Posts

Well, I just got my extra from serving in Afghanistan for a few months so now I finaly have money to buy new components for my comp . But since I'm an idiot when it comes to computer hardware I don't know what to buy. I have 500$ I can spend, since I have to buy some parts for my Yugo, it's falling apart. So, do you guys have any suggestions?

EDIT: 490$, I need to buy a new keyboard, half of the buttons on this one are barely working. I made so many typos I needed to edit this post five times .

Here are my computer specs:

Its a tough call to try to squeeze any more preformance from that setup.

Any upgrading would involve a cpu that uses an 1155 socket and ddr3 which your motherboard doesnt support.

You would need to change your motherboard, ram, and cpu.

You can get the god of gaming cpu's for 200 bucks - the I5-2500k

You can get a motherboard with that 1155 socket for around 100 bucks, but buying a cheap one, be sure to read the reviews, and dont get anything less than a p67 or z68 northbridge.

DDR3 ram you can get for about 30 bucks on amazon - 4x2 etc...

so far we are at 330$, that leaves 160$ for a gpu and windows 7x64 bit

If you want to use your stock power supply, i would suggest an ati gpu as they use less power. Craigslist is your friend...

@PowderdToastMan Well, I've got a working 1200W computer power supply I use as a 12/5/3.5V test station for testing electronic circuits so power is not a problem. And I don't want Windows 7, XP served me good so far, so I'm sticking to it. I found two DDR3 4GB for 25$ and ATI Radeon Sapphire HD5670 1GB for 50$. I'll look up the rest of the parts on Amazon and hopefully find what I need. Thanks for the help.

Right on

Yea the nvdia uses typically 30-40% more power than its comprable ati card but with that kind of wattage....wow.....no troubles there

The only reason i say win 7 is the 64 bit utilizes the 4 core cpu's better, but if your just looking to upgrade to play skyrim and mod it, skyrim is 32 bit, as well as only using 2 cores.

Nah, I play Skyrim on my brother's comp, he has a 2500$ beast so that's not a problem. And I don't want a quad-core cpu, it messes up with FO3 and I've just got it to work without problems (I thought it wasn't posible, but it is). I need to upgrade my computer cause my 3D moddeling programs start to lag when I create a high-poly mesh so I can't work on it no more, the fps drop to 12 from 170.
