abaris
While I have been enjoying the game, there really is little actual immersion going on here. As others have pointed out, your actions have few lasting effects reflected by the assorted NPCs in the world. Civil war line excepted for it's impact on populations, though the people themselves don't seem to change much It's not like Bethesda has no idea how to do this kind of thing, they managed to get it right with New Vegas (ok, Obsidian got it right), and it would have taken little effort to play that through and pay attention to what worked and what didn't. You said it. Although the fallout series normally isn't my cup of tea, I got hooked by how well it was executed and was playing it for months on end. Always to find something new, always a new way I never thought of before. And ALWAYS different ways how NPCs reacted to you - depending on your decisions. I really hoped they would implement these dynamics in Skyrim, but in this aspect its Oblivion all over.
BloodwolfeAK
After reading all the above posts, I understand and don't disagree with the valid points mentioned. I enjoyed all the Fallouts over the years, and also TES as it has progressed. Immersed? At times, certainly, maybe not so much other times. I don't stop and cogitate on it, but to put it into words....I just go with the moment. I just am. Where I am.I don't expect more than what is there. Earlier games in either storyline had problems....but, honestly, I still would rather be out wandering the world(be it apocalyptic post-nuclear US or Morrowind) than watching TV or doing one of those silly shooter games. As far as Skyrim goes...if you enjoyed climbing that mountain and finding that cave or following that river to its source....pickin weeds or fighting the mob as it came along in Oblivion then you will enjoy this as well. There are notable similarities and there are some changes as well. For the most part I think it is a step closer to getting it right. If it was a perfect game then it wouldn't need mods, would it? If you just focus on what is wrong, instead of enjoying what it IS, then that is too bad for you. Is it perfect? No. Is it better than the last one? Yea, I think so. And guess what, the next one will be even better! So it goes........ Having said all that, I gotta say, that yeah, having NPCs react to how you impacted the world in FO3 would have made this game even better! Oh well, maybe next time. At any rate, this is merely my own opinion and each must make their own!Cheers!
WaLkAwaY
...one of those silly shooter games. ______________________________________________________________ Anyway thanks for the replies people. Maybe the playable character actions impacting the world and NPC's will come from a mod? Weren't there complete game makeovers for Oblivion? I think another thing it might come down to based on some of the responses is how you personally feel about your involvement in the game and character having a direct impact on how much you time one feels they will spend on a game. I guess to someone who believes the game is everything they wanted then them spending time on it seems like a no brainer. To someone who wants something a little different or who's ideas of fun are different then they might not spend as much time or not even play it. To each their own as far as what they find fun. I guess the being able to ride dragons and hunt for food stuff will just have to wait until they release the SDK. :)
stars2heaven
I think the level of immersion in Skyrim is much greater than in Oblivion...but I hate having to pause everytime I enter my favorites! I want enough hotkeys that I can hotkey EVERYTHING if I wanted to.
Txtairintxt
I find the quests tend to be a bit Mary-Sue at times. I mean, I would love it if I didn't become all high ranking during the Civil War and just stayed a mere foot soldier. But, besides this I'd say the immersion is great. The beautiful scenery, music and advanced character conversations make it feel more real. (By advanced coversations I mean there's far less "So I saw a Mud-Crab the other day. Nasty little creatures." "Go away!" "I've heard others say the same. Bye!" that you got in Oblivion.) All in all, worth the money and a very great game, I found myself immersed and I have no mods.
