Matth85
The contrast is a little too much after. It looks... Just too sharp. You should tone down the contrast somewhat. My opinion at least. Cheers,Matth
DaedricWarHammer
What else? This armor is really giving me a hard time because the default looks so crappy already. I know it's over-contrasted.. maybe too dark?
DaedricWarHammer
Side note: That was my GIMP'd attempt. I normally use Photoshop. I think I'm going to re-do it from scratch on my other computer on Photoshop.
Matth85
I'd say some parts are way too dark, yes.You are trying to damage it/wear and tear it, right? Then you should do it by simply adding some layers of damaged metal and work with that. Add some blood stains, etc. You could also add some more scratches certain places. A good texture does not got too huge contrasts, or too dominated colors. Everything must be subtle! Small scratches at the right place, some bloody leather here and there, really would make it stand out.Hm... Other than that, I dont know what to say. You are the one deciding where to head with this :) Cheers,Matth
DaedricWarHammer
I did with the base plate - that's banded armor so a lot is hidden behind the leather which is over-bright. :/ Grawrrr.. I'm refinishing the armor now. Another pic up in a minute.
DaedricWarHammer
Also - I'm going to wait to apply the damages so we can see what looks more natural. I'm bringing out the natural flaws and applying a slight rust to the chest piece but that's all for now.
Matth85
Just remember to be subtle :) Big shapes and contrast are never good, in any context. It's the small details that the eye catches up, and we all adore!Oh, and remember to change the specularity if you make it more damaged. The more rust/wear and tear it got, the less it would shine. You should also consider adding to the normal map. If the rust is very defined, it should get some depth thanks to the normal map. BGatot
Given that armor is a warrior's lifeblood and probably one of its most precious and valuable posession, you would think they would treat it with some kind of substance (oil? animal fat?) that would prevent it from rusting. Not only rust is ugly, it'll probably weaken the metal which could cost the owner's life! Any real-life suit of armor you find today, if they were original, probably has been stored for some time with no maintenance performed on it, due to it not being used daily anymore, so they would look a bit worse for wear. They won't look like that when they were used daily! I would vote for no rust, and generally better condition. You'd wash your car regularly and generally keep it from rusting away, don't you? I'm sure the armor owner of the past would do the same for his armor set.
Matth85
Normal iron rusts. In skyrim you melt iron ore, right from the mountain. It would rust.So for me, some rust would be natural. But as said, keep it subtle! Too rusted stuff couldn't be worn!
