VanllaBraun Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 In the Irkngthand Slave Pens doing a Thieves guild quest I found some random strange diamond symbol with a bunch of lines thru it while exploring on top of some pipes below the ocean. I did some Google searching and found nothing about it or even a similar find. Anyone else find something similar? Any explanation for this? Nothing occurs when I press the action key on it. It's in the most random, hidden place it has to be something!

I've seen examples in Solitude, Markarth and other places. It looks like something used by thieves to mark target houses, or ones to avoid. There might be a coding system available somewhere in game about it, explaining what the various cyphers mean.

Maybe Mercer left it here, as that's where I was on my way to.
Handofbane Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 There is a full explanation of what those marks are and what the different ones mean ingame. Join the Thieves Guild and once you get into the main room with Mercer and crew, look for the book "The Shadowmarks".
Draco856 Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 It's the symbol for a "Thieves Cache" It's mostly found on chests and barrels. It has things for members of the guild. There are several more, they are called "Shadowmarks" there's a book in-game about them.

Handofbane Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 As a side note - I gave up on my thief character for the time being, but was curious - one of the symbols means "this house is protected by the guild, do not rob". Has anyone figured out yet if there are actual repercussions for burglarizing these protected homes?
Scorpio9 Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 (edited) If I remember correctly, houses marked with that symbol are supposed to have some kind of treasure inside or belong to wealthy owner - that is how thieves mark rich places. brownpants Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 This was bugging me as well and I eventually worked it out. If you turn to the left, there is a steam vent on the upper part of the cavern wall. Hit it with a shout and a couple of potions should fall out (plentiful healing and strength)
