Fallout Character Overhaul doesn`t work

Hi guys,

I just modded my Fallout New Vegas inspired by this video:

So I downloaded all the files in the video description and put them into my game directory. I think I did everything right there, I put the files into the right folders.

But when I start the game I got red encircled exclamation marks instead of more detailled NPCs walking around... the texure pack is working, I got more detailled textures but the streets doesn`t look better to me. Doesn`t the texure pack enhance the quality of streets, rocks etc. too or does that another mod? If thats the case it seems not to be working right, too. However, I attached pictures of my game directory and the problems so you can see for yourself:

If somethings wrong with the files in the game directory please let me know

I would be thankful for your help

The white "!" on a red background indicates a missing mesh/texture. Do you have "ArchiveInvalidation" active? (All the modern mod managers include it now.) You may need to "toggle" it off and then on again so the game uses the loose files added by FCO instead of the ones in the BSA archive. If you aren't using a "mod manager", you should read the wiki article "FNV General Mod Use Advice".

  • Open your mod manager.
    • Mod Organizer (MO): Select your "Profile". Turn on "Automatic Archive Invalidation" in the "Configure Profiles" dialog. Close the mod manager.
    • Fallout Mod Manager (FOMM): Depending on the version you have, find "Archive Invalidation" either under the tools tab or find the button "Toggle Archive Invalidation".
    • Nexus Mod Manager (NMM) or the newer Fallout Mod Manager - Forked (FOMM): if there is a "check mark" shown next to "Archive Invalidation", remove it and close the mod manager. Open the mod manager, open the "Tools" and place a "check mark" next to "Archive Invalidation". If there is not a "check mark" next to "Archive Invalidation", place one there and close the mod manager.
    • Wrye Flash (WF): click on the "Installers" tab, then right-click on the "Package" column header (gray bar) and click to place a "check mark" on the "BSA Redirection" context menu entry. Then right-click on the "Package" column header again and select "Anneal All".

Red diamonds is a missing mesh. If there is missing textures the game will take another texture from something already loaded in memory and apply it which often gives a kaleidoscope effect, or it will appear as bright magenta with no texture at all.

This game seems to be more complicated to mod than other games. I didn`t even know you need Mod Managers for that, thanks for the advice. I downloaded all the managers you listed up and did what you wrote, but I still got the same problem. I even replaced the files from the Fallout Character Overhaul and the NMC texture pack with the old ones. It seems that some files seem to collide with each other, and the last mod files I added eject the ones from the other mod. (I read about this issue already in the FNV General Mod Use Advice article) I think this could be the reason its not working right.

Well, I will try to reinstall the game and the mods all over again. Before that, I will read the whole article and watch tutorials about the managers. Thank you nevertheless.

Greetings

You misunderstood. You only need one "mod manager". I gave you a list of the four most common just to point out how to toggle "ArchiveInvalidation" in each, not knowing which you might be using.

You should choose one manager, learn how it works, and stick with it. The reasoning behind this is that a given mod manager will only "know" about the mods installed through it. Any installed through a different manager are not recognized by others. The mod files will be present in the game Data folder (generally; Mod Organizer at least uses "pointers" in the Data folder to actual file locations elsewhere), but won't be "managed" along with the others. Sometimes the use of a different mod manager is necessary unless you learn how they differ and what is needed to make a mod formatted for another to work with your preferred, but exceptions to the general rule are easier to keep track of.

Mod Managers are not "required". They simply make many things easier once you get familiar with them. Just like you don't have to use "Windows" to manage your PC. You can do everything from the command line. It's just that most people find the "Windows environment" easier to handle.

I use Mod Organizer. Of course, this started when I was looking for something to keep my Fallout 3 data folder clean, and keep my mods organized. I have done extensive research into it, and found that it is a good fit for me. However, you might like NMM better, but to each their own. While talking about MO, allow me to help out a little, and this is why I like it. It's because while searching, I came across videos done by Gopher that covered MO. Then I also saw Dirty Weasel Media's videos, as well. Between the two of them I do know a lot more about MO than NMM. Which is a good thing, for me. However, my point is that you want to choose carefully, and use what is available. Some mods, though, will call for other archive invalidation tools, for FNV. I do recommend if you install a new mod, to deactivate the archive invalidation, then reactivate it. This will update your mods, and allow you to see what you need to. Please don't hesitate to ask more questions. We are all kind of like you, modding games, and we are here to help.

Thanks for the feedback. I used the fomm and I got it so far, that almost everything is working just fine, the game looks really great with the mods. But I still got the problem with the FCO. But now it works partially on some characters, but not at all of them. The bodys of all NPCs are shown now, but some of them got red exclamation marks instead of heads.

When I start a new game, I get this error message: "The FCO Eyebrowns UI extension was not detected. Please make sure User Interface Organizer is installed correctly. You may also need to re-install the mod."

What is this User Interface Organizer? Another mod I need? Because I only got 3 files in the FCO folder; an .esp, .esm and .dds file I only need to drag & drop / exchange. I don`t got an UIO in the mods I use. However, I linked some screenshots of the Issues so you can see for yourself:

If we still find no solution to solve this problem, I will make a video of my mod installing process. I will start all over again reinstalling everything, so you can see what I`m doing wrong maybe.

This sounds like you have some XML file conflicts. The order in which you install mods that include them (those which deal with the HUD or UI or Menus or Controls) are crucial. It's more complex than it appears on the surface. See the wiki article "HUD-UI-Menu Issues" which goes into the details and the solution.

UIO is a "mod" that stitches together various XML files from other mods that affect the HUD or UI or Menus into a seamless whole. Otherwise you would have to edit them together yourself. Get it and use it. It will make your life a lot simpler.

As for your remaining "red exclamation marks", try toggling "archiveinvalidation" off and then on again. You will probably need to do this every time you add a new mesh or texture to the game with FOMM.

  • 10 months later...

It appears that my game has some error meshes in it, but im tryign a brna d new game, so im going trough docs house, but doc is coveredn entirely by a white exclemation mark in a red diamond, I tried turning archive invalidation off and on, but is dosent work (using nmm) Is tthis because I'm using fco and yup? because I'm using compatibility and merge patches.

Please provide the information requested in the wiki "How to ask for help" article and start your own thread. See "Terms of Service" about resurrecting old threads.

Please see the 'Body Replacement Basics' section of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article as well to clarify what is going on.
