Rennn
Whenever I play an Elder Scrolls game, like Morrowind or Oblivion, and now Skyrim, I always have fun wandering around building my own story. Quests ruin it. Since I can't get a DOS emulator to run Daggerfall correctly, I'll just turn all my Elder Scrolls games into some cohesive place with no quests and random dungeons and npcs.Let's see... If I take Oblivion, take out all the music, take out all the quests (but leave the dungeons), download some graphics replacers (mostly to fix the trees; I'd almost prefer NO leaves to the plate things that Oblivion uses), yeah... Okay! I'll also add several thousand more square miles of terrain (fortunately, my graphics card can handle it) with many, many simple external and internal dungeons. Load times are basicaly nil for me, so that's not much of a problem. If I install just install HGEC, real swords, liquid water, OBGE, every landmass mod I can find, then if I mod myself hundreds of miles (not joking, and not exaggerating) of landscape, and then never ever do a quest, it'll be awesome. Oh, I'll also need a journal... And I'll need to fix the potato faces. In other words, I'll be converting Skyrim and Oblivion to modern quest-less versions of Daggerfall. I'll need to start with a clean install... tomorrow. I've been awake way too many hours and it's five o'clock in the morning. So yeah. Wow... epiphany: I just hate all quests in every game, ever. I've never played a quest I liked. Hmm.The things you discover about yourself in the small hours of the morning! :) Edited November 26, 2011 by Rennn
Jumonji
I totally get the desire to play without intrusive quests! They don't usually fall into the level of sophistication or maturity that I would enjoy - they just appeal to a more simplistic mindset than the game itself seems to have. However, i'm not sure no quests at all would be an improvement. It would get awfully lonely without some kind of AI or Game-Supported extended story line. Perhaps a different kind of AI focus that let the player shape their story more on their own goals would be feasible -- i.e., instead of just choosing your face, you could also chose your goals. E.g., I want to found a town and become mayor. I want to found a guild and have the best fighters in the land. I want to found a mage-hall and train mages in my own combination of spells and lore, etc. Now there's a game I could love!
