Skyrim random crash to desktop.

Title says it all, random crash to desk top, no time frame its completely sporadic, so far it has happened: In combat, out of combat (Wandering), Opening doors, and fast traveling.

 

No specific location triggers it, nor is the timeframe the same, ive gone 10 minutes and crashed, and ive gone hours without a crash.

All masters, and some mods that needed cleaning have been cleaned.

Any help will be appreciated, will continue to trouble shoot in the meantime.

Hello,

• Random CTDs troubleshoot.
• Make sure you're using the good mods >> Dangerous mods list.
• Verify gamecache.
• CTDs troubleshooting page on Reddit. depending on what's happening in game, choose the subsections that describe the best your problem.

Here is a list of things that may help stabilizing your game if not already been done. :

/// Load order / mods conflicts :

• Use L.O.O.T once and click on the "sort plugins buttons".
• Create a wryebash patch including leveled lists.
• Create a merged patch with Tesedit excluding leveled lists
• How things work in Tes5edit : load order / conflict looser - winner / Forwarding / adding as a master. More specifically, you may create a manual patch between two or more mods.

/// Cleaning and correcting potential bugs :

• Clean your master files to eliminate potential problems : Gopher's videos cleaning your masterfiles on the Nexus Tesedit page.
  Start Tes5edit, simply untick everything, (right-click/select none) and add only a tick to the esm/esp you want to check + update.esm, Tesedit knows what to do and will load all the dependencies automatically.
  - Begin with loading only Skyrim + update, ITM / UDR + save ctrl +s and close.
  - Then load Skyrim + update + Dawnguard, ITM / UDR + ctrl +s and close.
  - Then load Skyrim + update + Hearthfire, ITM / UDR + ctrl +s and close.
  - Then load Skyrim + update + Dragonborn, ITM / UDR + ctrl +s and close.
• The method above can be used to clean mods. LOOT should tell you which plugin you should clean. You may also do a check errors.

/// Settings / memory :

• Ensure you're not using redundant memory patches, such as SSME, skse.ini; crash fixes with the UseOSAllocators=1 enabled, or safety load. Preferably, use skse memory patch or crash fixes.
• Memory blocks log will help to refine memory settings.
• Backup your ini files and delete the files. Skyrim.ini / SkyrimCustom.ini / SkyrimPrefs.ini found in C:\Users\User\Documents\My Games\Skyrim then use your vanilla launcher to autodetect and use best settings for your computer.
• STEP INI tweaking wiki.
• You may install ENBOOST >> ENB graphics / ENB haxx.

/// Save game :

• Don't uninstall mods at mid-game, there are no clean save in Skyrim but using save script cleaner can help removing orphan scripts.
• New SkyrimTools, (corrupt saves topic).

/// Meshes healer :

• Read here, this is potentially a cause of CTD that you can resolve by following the mod procedure on this page.

/// Useful informations :

• Skyrim requirements wiki.
• Skse installation : skse on steam or Manual install. (SKSE, memory and skse.ini). SKSE logs are here : C:\Users\User\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\SKSE.
• Skyrim performance monitor.
• STEP troubleshooting page.
• Ensure your skyrim installation is healthy = Make skyrim vanilla again.
• an efficient guide to build your game : STEP.
• Make sure you're using the latest USLEEP.
• Crashdump analysis.
• Papyrus log is a scripts log only and doesn't cover anything else, not a crash log. Interpreting Papyrus Log Errors, thanks to Arthmoor.

So after doing everything on the list above, i thought i had fixed it, but i seem to have figured out what triggers it.

 

After applying all fixes above i fast traveled out of Morthal to Falkreath and did several quests (Mehrunes Razor)

 

Upon returning to Dawnstar the CTD's begun again, nothing specific triggers them other than just being near Dawnstar.

 

Still trying to troubleshoot any advice would help.

Are you using ENBoost and SSME?? Skyrim uses a 32 bits executable, and if you start installing mods, the 3GB limit will make the game crash. It could also be related to incompatibilities between mods or script errors. The engine used in bethesda games is pretty unstable.

ENboost yes, the guide above said not to use SSME cause it is a "Dangerous" Mod

I think the latest versions of SKSE include that memory patch, but I'm not sure. I'm using both right now. It's pretty hard to troubleshoot crashes in skyrim, the devs never gave us the proper tools to do that. The game just closes, without even saying what went wrong before crashing. Papyrus logs don't show anything useful either. My game crashes too, but I'm accustomed to it. Having ENB effects increases the chance of crashing for me. I usually start disabling some mods to make the game a bit more stable, but after a while it will start crashing again. That's the price of having more than 400 mods.

• CTD in a particular cell / location.
• CTD doing a particular action.
• You may also try a selective loading : untick your mods by chunk of 10-20 and go to the location the game is supposed to crash. If the game doesn't load, for purpose testing you may use the save script cleaner.

For anyone looking for a solution, so far after a day of fiddling and testing...

 

It would appear that the problem is resolved, however, it is hard to recreate as the crashes are random, to begin with.

 

That being said I have had only one CTD and it wasn't in the area where it happened before.

 

If you are looking for a solution to random CTDs, first and fore most if you can get away with a clean install and remod your game i would recommend doing so, just make sure when you do it you follow the S.T.E.P. guide to a T, it would have saved me so much time and effort.

 

Now if you can't do that you should follow darstylers first post in this thread, it looks intimidating, and it kind of is but after completing all the steps i have seen a drastic reduction in CTDs to the point where its at least playable.
