Data folder or Data/Texture folder

I've downloaded a handful of texture type mods that say to put the .dds files in the data folder but then I get others that actually have texture folders that you drop in the data folder. Shouldn't all the .dds files be in the data/texture folder?

Logic would dictate that you drop them in the texture folder that resides in the data folder, but I recommend that you simply follow the instructions in the readme.

 

Alternatively, you can drop the files in both the data folder and the textures folder.

All texture replacers should have the common root of \Skyrim\Data\textures\. Period. This is the only place the game will look for them.

 

If a mod adds new items to the game however (this requires a plugin) the resources (textures, meshes, etc.) for that mod need to go where the readme specifies. It may be \Data\textures\ or it could be in \Skyrim\Data\RandoMod\Swords\SuperSpiderSlayer.dds. They save the texture paths into the new meshes.

Oddly a large number of them say just "the data folder" but there are a few that have a texture folder that you drag and drop into the data folder. They all seem to be working fine though...once I run into some of the Forsworn I'll know if the mod I got for their outfits works.
