Ok, in the poll are some questions to get this debate started.

Should Suicide be a crime?

In Finland it is not a crime and I think this represents a more advanced thinking in our legal system, because logically everyone has the right to decide on their own life and whether it should end or not. Death is a personal right.

Death Penalty:

The policy of the European Union is to disapprove of the death penalty and all EU member countries have abolished it from their legislations. Again, more advanced thinking.

The goal of the penal system should be reformation and rehabilitation of the criminals, everyone deserves a second chance, even murderers and rapists.

1. No. I have more reasons then the one mentioned in the poll. Our criminal system is not nearly perfect and I don't want to risk killing someone innocent. Quite a few serial killers have stated that they prefer the death penalty. Victims families do not always approve of the criminal being killed.

2. No. You have the right to your own life.

3. A mix of option one and three. Mainly option three. I see the prison system as something that should help criminals become suitable for society, but also separate them from being dangerous. Not everyone can be "cured."

Attempted suicide should not be a crime, as it's the right of the person performing it. Some people will say that committing suicide is a cowardly act, and yet they have no clue what they're talking about. Many will say it's cowardly because it leaves loved ones in pain, yet I ask those people, what's worse, the short-term pain of a lost family member, or the long and agonizing pain of the one wanting to commit suicide?

That was a rhetorical question, because this thread is not about the morals of suicide.

When it comes to the death penalty, I do agree that it should not be allowed. The primary objective should be to remove dangerous people from society so they can not harm others or themselves. The second objective should be to rehabilitate them, however, that comes to a certain degree.

I personally believe that while a murderer should not receive the death penalty, he should spend the rest of his life behind bars. What's worse, a quick and painless death, or a 40+ year long prison sentence?

Here´s another question: Should piracy be a crime? By now piracy is so far spread that it will be impossible to root it out, so there are political parties advocating the allowing of piracy for personal use. Oh, but now I forget, if anyone says that piracy should not be a crime, then the moderators will come to feed like a bloodthirsty pack of sharks and instantly ban everyone for supporting piracy as per DarkOnes orders, so we cannot really debate this question without breaking forum rules.

Then said political parties must be the dumbest people alive. If we went by their logic, then many game companies would run a high chance of collapsing because most people would rather get the now 'legal' free version rather than pay for it.

It truly saddens me to know that people like these idiots actually exist. Despite all we've achieved, and how powerful the human race is, we are still one of the dumbest species on this planet.

I don´t think the movie industry for example would collapse because of piracy, or the porn industry for that matter. They still make countless millions in box office income and DVD sales even though every movie end up as a torrent on piratebay eventually, usually after the DVD release. So there will always be people willing to pay to see the new movies in the theater and the movie industry will make handsome profits. I know games companies deserve support as the costs of developing games are going up, but I am NOT going to side with the BIG BUSINESS on copyright issues as regards to movies and such. Just to be sure let me say that I also don´t support piracy, just to keep the hungry moderators at bay.

Game companies would suffer because the only thing stopping most people from committing piracy is morals. Remove the need for those morals and you'll end up with even more piracy. But I do suggest we avoid any further discussion on piracy, and I also suggest not mentioning the moderator staff in every post and stuff.

Oh, but here´s a piece of information: Suicide is NOT illegal in the UK, not since 1961 and the passing of the Suicide Act. Look it up in Wikipedia. So we should be allowed to debate suicide on these forums. By the way, I congratulate the British on giving their citizens the right to decide over their own lives.

As for me, my suicidal tendencies are well known to the local authorities after the university called the mental health authorities over a couple of essays I wrote. However, since I am not going to do anything to myself before my parents are dead, which should take some 10 to 20 years, the authorities are quite content, but what happens after those years have passed is up to me and if I choose to end it all, there is very little the authorities can do. Only a total change in my personal thinking and logic could prevent that unfortunate outcome from happening and so far I see no reason to change my mind.

I see that someone voted that the goal of the penal system is to make the life of the criminals a living hell? I will refrain from calling that individual a sadist as that would be a personal insult, but I think that losing your freedom is punishment enough. Maybe some would like the prisoners to be waterboarded or put to the rack or some other form of torture like in medieval times or in Guantanamo Bay?

I would say taking away freedom is enough of a punishment, not even a loner in one of those "luxury prisons" could stand it forever to have no ability to go outside the area and have limited connections to the outside world. Even if one is a hermit enough, the idea itself of being restricted to in a case one would want to, is enough of a mental torture.
