JRHT
I've got my installation of Skyrim because I (possibly mistakenly) believe I have a good enough rig to run it as so. My problem is that when roaming outdoors, I'm getting about 32 fps at best. When there's flame on screen, or in the fog of Riften, it's dropping down to about 15-20 fps. I can't help but think I'm not getting what I should from my rig, but if anyone on the forum could let me know if I'm being realistic about whatFPS I should be getting, it would be much appreciated. I'm running an i7-930 @ 2.8 Ghz with 12GB of RAM and a three-way SLI with 3 x ATI HD5830. I've installed Syrim 4GB (http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1013) but it's not made a huge difference, maybe 2fps.
TKHawke
What setting do you have it on? I have an ATI 5850 and an intel core2 quad with 8GB of ram and can run skyrim on high with no problems. Though running ultra is horribly laggy for me.
Cashh
SLI and ATI ? Do you mean crossfire x3 ? Anyway try to run on one card only and see if you get better results. What driver are you using ? This is the new one that supports Skyrim+crossfire My link. You can also try using a third party software like radeonpro , create a profile for Skyrim and force the Crossfire profile for Oblivion. Game is very CPU dependent but that still seems low for your rig.
JRHT
TKHawke - I'm experimenting with it on Ultra Cashh - Sorry, yes, I mean Crossfire. I've just disabled the second and third cards through Control Panel (and hence, disabled Crossfire) and have seen an instant 10fps improvement. I'm currently using Catalyst 11.9, having experimented with Catalyst 11.11 with no success. To be honest, I've always found updating the ATI drivers an absolute pain, but I will try the drivers you recommended as well as just disabling the third card (using Control Panel) and see what happens. JRHT
OK - quick update: Using the older driver:* Only using the two cards provided a higher FPS than using the three, but still worse than using one in isolation Using the new driver:* Provided a much better outcome with three cards than the old driver, compared to both one card or three cards. Am now getting about 45 FPS in Windhelm, where I was prevously getting about 15.
JRHT
Another update: Catalyst 11.11b does provide more FPS, but seems to have issues loading some textures and smoke (i.e. they appear pink or light purple). I also note from the AMD website (http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/catalyst-1111b-performance.aspx), that there's still not a driver that supports Crossfire for the 5xxx series. Catalyst 11.11 gives me up to 35 FPS in Windhelm but is still prone to lagging. Doesn't have the texture problem though.
