Improved Mellee Combat Mod PLZ!

Wow, very impressed with a lot of aspects of Skyrim. However one of the biggest things about adventuring around is the combat of course. Now I understand its not going to be perfect but there are definitely a few things that need to be modded. I would love to see something similar to Dark Souls combat. I don't think its that far of a reach either.

 

Currently its very floaty and spammy. If some guy whacks me with a great sword it doesn't even seem to phase my character or interrupt whatever he is doing. This is just PISS POOR. A slightly "i got hit" effect is needed here with a camera bump. This would greatly get rid of the spamming combat very quick and force some strategy. Also we need a parry mechanic. The nice thing about this game not being online is that the technical aspects of combat are greatly reduced...hence timing and range and all of those things that make combat a skill instead a button mashing/strafing exercise become a very fun reality. So here is what I'm proposing initially:

 

1- Hit effect - This can vary in degree depending on the weapon. Maybe there is a perk that decreases this indicating you are a badass and can take a single swipe without being effected. Need camera bob for this

 

2- Parry Mechanic - this is a timing risk/reward move. It allows you to parry your opponents move leaving them open for a devastating counter attack (skill strike?). If you miss, it leaves you open and takes some stamina

 

3- Block Mechanic - This just needs updating. I want to see my sword bounced back or something other than just allowing me to not take a % of damage. Needs to feel visceral and have camera effect as well.

 

4- Reduce strafing speed - I can dance in circles with a big sword swinging away...this is just silly.

 

5- Side-Step evade - Similar to fighting games. Double tap the left key or right key and your guy side steps. Maybe this is available for certain armor types...maybe a perk system is written around this stuff. Rogues can roll or something.

 

6 - Basic AI to use some of these for enemies.

 

Again, google Dark Souls and look at a quick you tube video on

 

Anyways, just some initial thoughts. Hope to see something like this eventually.

I'm willing to work on this, but i just write code. I'm gonna need a team that can do modeling and animations.

 

Hit Effect: If it's possible to access and controls the animations within the game engine, then yes. This might be possible.

 

Parry and Block Mechanic: Possible. if the staggering animation exist. I did this in Oblivion and i'm sure i can do this in Skyrim

 

Reduce strafing speed: Yes. easy to do

 

Side Step Evade/Rolling: If the animation exist or are made, then yes. Possible

 

AI improvement: Yes, but depends on the tool set that Bethesda may or may not release.

parry could work as just attacking with a weapon right at the same time your opponent does

 

power attack + power parry = 0% damage taken

power attack + parry = 50% damage taken

attack + parry = 0% damage taken.

 

ofc on both sides, so opponents would parry too.

 

a 0.2-0.5 sec window would be enough for successful parry I guess, otherwise you just cut each other

 

 

but I guess combat works good compared to spells, that are JUST SICK. I mean on Master difficulty, ANY mage can burn you to ash till you get to him by simply spamming fireballs every half sec. (and whole your screen is on fire so you can't see a s***). Not to mention you can't evade it since it's AoE is freaking HUGE. NPCs seems to even have unlimited mana, as opposed to you who run out of magicka after few casts..

IMO, magic works better than combat control-wise, but may be in greater need of balance (indeed, NPC mages have insane resources...?). However, balance is just number crunching, while the discussed improvement of melee is something completely different.

 

EDIT: More on topic. An improved combat system is an absolute number one on my wish list, and is being discussed a lot in other threads as well. It's my impression that sword n' board and two-handed works well, but single weapon (because of spell or simply fluff) and DW are both a bit awkward. DW seems powerful enough, but it just doesn't feel right...

More indirect, I think sneak attacking needs some tweaks. The fact that DW power attack is the most powerful sneak attack makes the whole thing not very sneaky.. I love how they did sneak attacks in Dark Messiah - really Dark Messiah is, to me, the paragon of 1st-person melee combat systems!

I completely agree with you the melee combat in Dark Messiah is as yet unmatched by any game I've played since. If we could 'port' the comabt from DM over to Skyrim it would be the best game ever...

 

Real time 1st person dismemberment...the antithesis of attack spamming...instant kills (both ways)...standard enemies can kill you if you're cocky...impaling...kicking...counterattacks...blood flying through the air...actually dangerous magic...enemies are wary of you...shields get pummelled into oblivion...

 

The list of good things about DM combat goes on...

Now that I remember it, the ability to hold power attacks is also the mechanic for sneak attacks in DM: You hold a power attack and sneak near your target. When you're close enough he switches the way he holds the daggers to indicate he's in position. You then release attack to execute.
