Help on a simple Armor mod

I was able to add meshes from other files with no problem. (Incidentally, just as proof-of-concept, here's the mod I made: http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1959) Well, once I figured it out it was no problem. Nifskope can be finicky about some things. But that tutorial had everything I needed.

For alpha channel stuff, this illustrates the basic concept: http://www.axialis.com/tutorials/misc/tutorial010.jpg

The black parts are invisible, the white parts are visible. But if you have two different meshes in your nif, an armor one and a body underneath it, the alpha stuff on the armor texture only effects the armor. So the part of the armor that you black out will be invisible, and the body mesh underneath will show through.

Uzidian - You'll probably have to work with both the texture and mesh. The reason being, by default the armor nifs only have a partial body mesh underneath them, so if you removed the torso there would just be a void underneath it instead of a body.

Thanks coming along nicely now. Just got to get nifskope to co-op with me and it don't help you gotta do everything twice XXXXXXXX_0.nif and XXXXXXXX_1.nif (at least that is my assumption anyways)

Hi sorry to distract from the OP but I've been attempting the same thing with the nightingale armor, hoping to remove the arms. I basically blacked out the arms of the texture file in gimp and copy/pasted malebody_1 into torso_1 and applied a nialphaproperty to the nitrishape of the armor. However ingame the arms themselves are purely seethrough. This is my first attempt so while I've tried to follow the tutorials, I'm not gonna pretend I wasn't pretty swamped by them. Is there any chance one of you chaps could have a glance at the file? I'm sure there's some glaring error in there I've overlooked. I considered the "Deleting a piece of armor" topic of the mentioned wiki article, but the nitrishape of the armor seems to encompass the entire thing, and when I tried to remove pieces individually it, as it says, caused a bunch of junk blocks at the bottom.

Thanks

Wow, that's really weird I have been trying to do the same thing all day- Ancient Nord female Armor minus the stupid plates on the hips. However, I do kinda like the shoulders and chest thing. But whatever same idea.

First time attempting to play with textures/meshes. I was a graphic design major so I have a decent understanding of photoshop, but when it comes to this kinda stuff, I have no idea what I'm doing. I did manage to do this, through reading various how to's:

But nothing is being removed as I wanted. After reading all the posts here, I understand the problem but I don't think I have the understanding needed to actually fix it. So please let me know if you finish this project. I would love to have the files when you're done. (If you don't mind)

I can tell what to do using Photoshop but there are missing body parts under those hip plates too you may not have a problem if you leave the leather/ chainmail, but if you wanna lose those too we'll have to figure out the invisible body thing first.

First, use the quick select tool and select the hip parts and layer via cut. Uncheck or delete the new layer to erase the part you do not want.

Then click the channels tabs over the area where you see the layers. and select the alpha channel (NOT ALL TEXTURES HAVE THIS, THIS ONE DOES) and paint the area that you just cut out

I'll send you the DDS for you to use/look at to learn but there is a small missing body area so uploading as a mod would be irresponsible right now.

Also, are you trying to remove the front metal too or just the the hips?

nah just the ugly hip plates. i would like the leather and mail to stay. i have followed several tutorials about dealing with alpha layers and i'm still getting the same result of a shiny black hip plate. for now i'm giving up, i don't really have a lot of free time for modding. thanks for your input :)

I sent you an email if you reply so I can attach a file I'll just send you the TEMP fix for you then when I figure out the mod I'm trying to make I'll do a variation for you it's really not much more work to make a save halfway through the process in order to make the variation.
