Wrye Bash and friends

Just starting to learn about modding games and such. Still quite the Noob. I have both Wrye bash and Obmm because I've heard more people say that I might as well have both. Obmm seems much less complicated to use. What's a bash and why do I need to do it?What's with all these other programs and why are they important? BOSS, tes4edit, tes4lodgen, and some others I can't think of. Why doesn't wrye bash just do all this stuff on it's own? Does it basically come down to time and money? Why isn't there a download that just has all this stuff in one package?

 

Let me know if I could have made this post more user friendly, I've a noob when it comes to forums too.

Both are free programs, no money involved.

Wrye Bash is essentially the professional one, the modder's mod manager. It's far superior to OBMM in capabilities, has mod conflict resolution capabilities, and is the only way to install FCOM.

 

WB doesn't support OBMM install scripts, but supports its own install scripts, and it acts as a user-customizable installer for mods which don't have one, so 98% of the mods that need a script with OBMM have the same stuff handled automatically by Wrye Bash. DarnUI is the one notable exception.

 

As a basic user, you don't want FCOM, and you don't need tes4edit. BOSS is a mod sorter, you need it.

 

If you don't understand why they're important, keep your mod count to an absolute minimum, just the hard essentials for you, plus very small conflict-free stuff. Running multiple complex mods requires mod management tools and effort in understanding and using them.
