Please, If you make a mod file, read this!

Unpack it onto the desktop, check it's in the right file structure, then cut and paste it into the right folder. It takes like 30seconds max.

Yeah, but it's very annoying. I did describe doing exactly that, so it's not like I need to be told how to do it, more like I shouldn't have to. It's a hassle that a proper packing of a mod file would avoid. Hence why I am asking that modders consider this when making their files =)

Be safe and always unzip to a separate folder first where you can safely inspect the contents before moving into the game data folder.

I always inspect the contents 'from' the zipped state. I'm not worried about viruses, I can handle those. I just like to see what's being modded. But when extracting it's just two or three little clicks to have it fully installed.. if, and only if there are no extraneous unnecessary folders. So I think it's a perfectly legitimate request for modders (of which I am one, but haven't released my stuff yet).

I think some people just need to pay more attention.

Pack zip, 7z, rar from here -> [My Mod Folder] / [Data/Meshes/Textures/Etc] / [Modded File]

^ is standard

Generally it'll be like...

[My Mod Folder] [Read Me] [+ Image(s)] [+ Optional Files] / [Data/Meshes/Textures/Etc] / [Modded File]

Nothing wrong with having a readme... in fact it's another nice thing that all files should include. A lot of modders do an excellent job with readme files =)

What happens usually is I click past the personal folder to data, then to textures or whatever to see what is in there, then back out to data, extract, and the personal folder gets thrown in too. Very annoying.

I use 7-Zip which extracts it to the folder name anyways, then I open that and use my brain for all of 0.5 seconds so I copy over meshes/textures into /Data/ and not the whole folder.

I mean really, use your brain for just an instant. That's all it comes down to.

Sheesh, insults for a little request that hurts no one. It's like getting insulted for asking to use the bathroom in a public restaurant and the person at the register says "If you had to use the bathroom you should have thought about that before you left the house."

The reason Velexia put this up is because he/she/WE would like to just use NMM to download and install the various mods and if the mod is not pack right the NMM installs the random personal folders which can (no will) get confusing later on. If people do pack the mods right for the NMM there will be far less "your mod don't work right help me" messages from the less experienced or new modders, saving your precious modding time for creating great mods rather than spending time answering the question of how to install make you mod work.

Pretty much dead on =)

Not sure why there is so much hate in regards to this thread. What the thread is about is perfectly valid.

Mods should be stored in the format the OP was saying. I know a lot of modders are new to it and might do it wrong, but this thread is about helping them realise how to do it.

Simple rules:

Inside the zip file should be what you should see inside the Data folder. For example, in my files there is a "textures" folder, and a "meshes" folder, that can be extracted straight into the Data folder (which is what NMM does).

If you're including a readme file, then it should be at the same level as those folders (which will also put it in the Data folder). Make sure to name the readme something unique, such as "Thepal's Grass Retexture Readme.txt". A lot of mods call it "readme.txt" which means every mod overwrites any previous readmes with the same name.

If you're unsure if you have done it right, open up the zip file in whatever program you use, and see what is inside it. If there is a folder called "My Mod Folder", or "My Documents", or anything like that, then your mod won't install correctly.

NMM should be adjusted. Not every single mod on Nexus.

No one is calling for every existing mod to be changed just please setup new mods to work that's all. All the existing mods are just textures for the most part anyways but later on when we're downloading esp's it will be very helpful.

Just going to close this one. Nobody likes being told what they should and should not do. Some people do this sort of thing as a way to keep their mod separate from others so that it can be backed up and indexed. Often people have a hard time trying to find mods because they don't know who made them and everyone titles theirs as "download".

More to the point, just deal with it.
