Enhanced Civil War Gameplay

I personally have very little modding knowledge, and i realize that modders are probably full to the brink if insanity with new cool ideas just waiting to be crafted into mods when the appropriate tools come out. But i would like you to at least consider my idea, and maybe, just maybe someone will take it and make a nice mod from it (I just wanna play it really).

So the basic idea is to give the player control over a small unit of soldiers from either side of the civil war going on in Skyrim. (Btw, I did install many mods in oblivion, so at least i have some knowledge about what is at least possible to create as a mod). You will act as the commander, captain, or whatever leader title you find appropriate, in this little unit, and campaign against the enemy. The campaign starts with you getting something like a handful of soldiers and a bunch of tents, after that you follow whatever orders your courier brings you from your general in command. The gameplay is more focused on your skill at managing your garrison or camp that you set out, and planning an attack, rather then just roaming around with a bunch of imperials chopping up bandits for you. The time you spend on building up and defending your camp should at least be ten times the time you spend mindless killing. And from here on i just make this a list instead of writing it all out for you.

List of gameplay possibilities:

  • Stationing and setting up a camp, much like this you find in vanilla Skyrim, only that you are the boss.
  • You receive founds from the empire which you need to buy supplies for your troops, hire new troops, pay off villagers for information etc.
  • Ability to enhance your camp or garrison with training equipment, smiths, or barricades.
  • Hire misc troops like scouts, smiths, assassins, war dogs and so on
  • Giving rather complex orders to your soldier, the more the better, something like patrolling, roaming the area, basically setting up their everyday patterns.
  • Enemy camps are primary targets, you must first find them, then you can plan and prepare your men for fighting.
  • Somewhat complex and realistic system for your troops moral, they need food and good sleep and too much hard fighting will decrease moral.
  • Realistically enough, couriers bring all your orders and information from your superiors, you may off course request things from them, more soldiers, more founds and so on.
  • Once your scouts have found an enemy camp, it will be marked temporarily on your map.
  • Your troops have skill and level which increases if they fight, spar or practice on training equipment.
  • Your unit may grow in size, and once you are big enough, maybe you get orders to clear out and garrison a fort and do your operations from there.

Well that's basically all i can squeeze out, if there is something you don't understand, just ask. If you like my idea, thanks! Please comment if you have anything to add, and if you are a modder and like this, take it! I just want to see it done really, and I would be super-exited if someone decided to make a mod out of this concept. Thank you for reading!

I've always found weird that in a war for all Skyrim, all military presence you find are camps with 10 or less units. The war is so downscaled that it almost feels like a larp skirmish. Edited by necKros

That's obviously because of restrictions related to cpu capacity

Yes, I had an entire topic made asking someone to flesh out the legion.

Funny how as a legate of a professional army you don't have any responsibilities or privileges...

I find it very weird how I'm rewarded by money, I feel like a cheap mercenary/errand boy when that happens. I rather be rewarded with medals, signet rings, ribbons or a farm around a nice part of whiterun.

The best way they could use an auxillery would be as a flanking force, or a skirmishing unit, or a unit to take out enemy assets like catapults. So more creative missions, and more variety of them too.

Better rank progression would be nice, I seem to fly through the ranks like it's a joke.

Should be cavalry units, yes they can't attack but their sheer mobility(especially with gallop speed mods) would be enough to turn the tides of a battle, would need some hefty scripting but it would add super immersion.

More scenes to help us connect or grow closer to Tullius or Ulfric or atleast give them a moment to show off how bad ass they are, like Ulfric shouting 10 archers off a wall, or Tullius single handedly killing 5 stormcloak assassins, WITH A BUTTER KNIFE.

This was the first thing I though of doing myself, but so many people are probably going to do it, I figure I might as well make some of my own content.

But your idea seems more like turning skyrim into a text rts... If you could pull it off, I'm sure it would be sweet.

All I really want is more battles. And more people fighting at each battle. A lot more.

40 on 40 would be sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. If not more.

I guess i see your point with the text rts thing, I see it more like a war mod with strategic elements.

And when it comes to fighting something like 40 vs 40 people in Skyrim, there are some major issues that i do not know if you can tackle. The frame-rate would probably drop very low, not really sure why, but I know from experiments with oblivion that to many people screws the frames up. Also the combat mechanics are not well adapted for such large scale fights, if you would drop 80 people on two sides of a field, they would rush together in a blob and there would be no cohesive battle. It would be the opposite of "Total war" battles, this I know from oblivion and experimenting with the old construction set it had.

Oh btw, like I said in my original post, i do not know much about modding, I would not be able to make this mod, i only hope that someone picks it up.

This sounds great. I want to see an actual war rather than a petty tussle which is what it is currently. Some large random events could be added as well, and as said above some more interesting missions over than take this fort, blah blah blah!

Exactly, the possibilities for scenarios are endless, defending a fort against en enemy attack would be pretty sweet too. Even defending a small camp with a bunch of barricades is a fair fight (especially if you are the one setting up the defense). Don't forget the dynamic and strategic part tho, i really think that is the core of it.

Along the lines of patrolling and such, you should be able to make roads safer by having them be patrolled. Unsafe roads means more bandits, bears, trolls etc. And the enemy can intercept your couriers, and you can intercept theirs. You should be able to hire spires to masquerade as Imperial couriers too... this has a ton of potential and could be really cool.
