No Crafting Level-ups

Something I'd think would happen is that you would lower your possible max level. Once you are 100 in each skill (I believe that's at level 80 from what I've heard) you can't level anymore. This would futz up how many perks you get (unless you do have it give you perks, in which case it would futz up scaling since you'd have perks beyond your character level.)

And honestly, the non-combat skill can make you into a juggernaut, it's totally balanced to have you level off of them.

That seems a bit severe of a solution. The objective is to reduce the impact of non-combat skills on leveling up, not halt leveling.

We still need a definitive answer: How does Skyrim handle level-ups?

1. If there's a value of 'progress towards next level' then this would be an easy thing to mod in, just change the value that is added to this figure on each

2. If it's a total progress bar (How many skill-ups total against a progress chart) then it will be much more difficult to mod in and require an adjustement of the entire leveling system.

It's not that the game is too easy or too hard. That's not what I'm intending here. The game is fun regardless of the level I'm at. I'd like to preserve the level experience while still being able to have a high crafting skill. To me the crafting skills should essentially be separate from the leveling experience.

I'm trying to get in contact with a modder who's released a leveling mod that makes the experience more linear and slower. My hope is that I can release an .esp that will slow leveling down so much you can grind a skill to 100 without gaining a level (or very few levels). Once you get the skill to the level you want, turn it back off and continue leveling as normal without having 30 levels from Smithing. I'll keep ya'll updated!

The difficulty is that we don't have a precise reading of how the leveling mechanic works. Does the game update a value of 'progress towards next level' or does it just recalculate it based on total levels of skills? Is this a value that can be modified to something other than an even number, or would we need to increase values across the board to compensate?

It doesn't recalculate anything based on the current level of anything. Thought it may level you up if you use the console to pump up a skill. The first time you level a skill on your level, it increases your level closer to the next one more than subsequent ones do. This is just from observation of regular play and may be inaccurate.

If you are going to just disable it after you max it out, why don't you just lower the player level via the console. Then remove additional perks.

Max level, I thought it was supposed to be 50?

No, max level is around 81 from what I've heard. Once/if you get all your skills to 100, you stop leveling. This happens around level 80ish. Slows down around 50. Remember also that if, for example, you're playing a mage, you won't be maxing 2-handed weapons, block, etc...

That kinda answers the question but we need more details. When you level up a skill and you just hit level 10, how is it tracking your progress towards level 11? Also, can that system handle fractions of numbers.

Well I spent some time last night typing away in Notepad and made up a bit of a solution - a metric crap load of BAT files.

Basically you just run a BAT file based on what you're trying to do. If you want to negate leveling from all skills, run that BAT file in Skyrim through the console. It will set the crafting skills to 100 but not add any perks so you still have to work to get the benefits. I'll be uploading the folder to the Nexus soon. I tried it last night and it works fine, so it can tide those of us interested in this sort of thing over until the CK is released in January. Once that releases I'll be remaking the mod to just completely prevent the crafting skills from contributing or make their contribution absolutely minimal, whatever one is simpler. I'd like to get a single ESP, but I don't know hex or anything like that so modding it right now is out of the question for me.

Hope this helps some of you guys out, let me know how it works!
