How to Study for Exams

Marcus Wolfe

Recommended Posts

I'm in Grade 10. I have an In Class Tech Exam Tuesday, A Formal English Exam Wednesday 11:45am, A Formal Math Exam Thursday 8:30am and A Formal History Exam Friday 11:45am. Each lasts 90 minutes.

I know you highly intellectual university types take your exams before the Christmas break, but could you share with me your wisdom on studying for Exams?

I'm off to study for my Tech now.

(Warning, this may be resurrected in June)

You mean to say your teachers haven't suggested ways to revise? And they haven't given you links to any revision websites? And they haven't provided you with past papers, etc? And you don't have any notes from the entire previous year, at all? If that's the case, then a) you go to a terrible school, and b) you're a terrible student, and if it's not the case, then you know the answer to your question already, and are simply trying to find some way to learn all the stuff without having to do any real work yourself.

Well, discussing idea and review some things once in a while could help you with your exams. Anyways, I never studied before any kind of exam :whistling: well, resulting in I never break my average scores, which, though its good already, its not the best I can do.

I'm grade 10 currently, and since I'm not fond of the learn-from-the-book style of studying, I would suggest either you discuss it with your friends, or just read a bit about it every time you have the mood. Anyways, you shouldn't depend on your teacher to give you things, if you want something right, you gotta do it yourself...

what's with all the school/homework/etc posts? didn't school just start? In fact it hasn't started in Australia yet..

But for my 2 cents....

When I was in uni I found the best way to study was to shut yourself in a quite room (and I mean quite, I used to do all of my study between midnight and 6 am because there was no noise) and simply write it out and do problems. If you think "hmm I'm not to sure about xx" look it up IMMEDIATELY other wise you never will, and you can bet it will be on the exam. After 30 minutes stop and spend 10 minutes reading through what you have written (reading not skimming). Now you that your at the 40-45 minute mark stop and do 40 push ups (or 20 if your a fatty  ). This will help you to disengage from the material, make sure the bloods flowing and release endorphins into your brain so you'll feel 'pumped' and good about yourself.

Do this in hour cycles for no more than 3 hours before a 30 minute break doing something completely different (like playing oblivion)

As to peoples comments about discussing it with class mates - DON"T DO IT!!!!! maybe not so important at year 10 but when you get to university you'll quickly learn 2 facts

- people are idiots and will fill your head with the wrong answers because they're.. well idiots.

- people are vicious and when things start to get competitive and there are internships/jobs/thousands of dollars in salary on the line based on your marks/ ranking they will deliberately tell you the wrong thing and try to 'psych' you out.

I did my studies in a field that was only mildly competitive and these practises were everywhere, I would avoid all contact with class mates around the exam phase. Think of it like sport, you can be the best of mates, but when your on the field your screaming for blood.

Someone here will have done law/ advertising/ business and will know exactly what I'm talking about.

hmmm.......

sounds good, definitely a few things I'm going to try have been mentioned here.

I wonder though, are there some strategies more efficient for studying specific subjects?

Well aren't you the self-centred egotist. This forum isn't about you; it isn't your personal help zone. If you're going to make a crappy spam-thread, you might as well let other people take part in it. Just because you have no more use for this thread doesn't mean others don't. The only, and I mean only, exception to this is when someone posts a legitimate problem in the technical support sub-forum.

Selfish jerk...
