sarnz
I honestly don't think there will be mods for money... The creative content is of the modder, and the tools used are from beth (and it's for their game). And even if there was some sort of royalty system implemented from beth -> modder, that mod would get pirated so fast because the guy would be labeled a 'sellout'. Plus, that same modder giving the mod for free and accepting donations, would probably get much more respect and more money as well. Who knows. I think there is too much legal BS to bother charging for mods.
Lachdonin
For peer-to-peer sharing of mods, i highly doubt the dyanamic will change. Steamworkshop will, at best, function just like TES Nexus and act as a data base for sharing plugins and mods. That's not to say we won't have to pay for official mods, but we've done that since Morrowind anyway.
xaliqen
If I can help people do what they love by enjoying and supporting their work, then it's a win-win situation. I support many indie development houses by paying for their work, and I really can't stress enough just how important it is to help those small studios really working to produce original content. If I can do the same for a few mods I really care about by paying for their work, then I'm okay with that. I just hope a trend like that doesn't exclude people who can't afford to pay, since mods are best when they can be enjoyed by everyone who bought the game. TotalRookie
Hopefully we can use the Nexus and that's it. If the worst happens, I'll be giving up whats left of my gaming life. The entire industry no longer has any respect towards the consumer.
solidus2845
I will try to use steamworks in addition to the nexus, just to see how it goes. I will never pay for a user created mod. I will never add my contributions to steamworks if they are going to charge people for my mod. I foresee valve trying to make a bunch of profit off of mods people create because lots of great modders will want to try making some money off of their time. Understandable, but I hope our best modders aren't too greedy and deny the community the free mods we all love. As such, The Nexus has been and always will be my headquarters for hosting my mods and finding other people's mods, plain and simple. Oblivion, dragon age, skyrim. Whenever I was curious about mods, this was the first stop I made. Long live The Nexus!
IsolatedPurity
Bummer, I'll miss out on all the good mods then :(. Maybe I'll get a chance to visit Skyrim a while after.
macole
Copyright won't help. Read the Steam Workshop Contribution Agreement carefully because once you send in your contribution (mod) to Steam Workshop you give all rights to your work to Steam. Your work, copyright or not as long as it is in Steam it no longer belongs to you! And that's the way it is. I didn't like the Steam Skyrim integration from the beginning. I expressed my concerns once in a form thread to which some fool responded that I cancel my pre-order. I took his advice and thanked him. I hope the fanboy is happy I know I am. Skyrim looks and sounds like it is need of some serious work. Now there's this news. Well, it just gives me a queasy sick feeling. It has become apparent that the CK is late in order to only to allow Steam to weave its suffocating tendrils tightly within its core. Who knows this could result in some brilliant mod ideas coexisting beautifully together. Just like Kvatch Rebuilt and Kvatch Aftermath. In a brief few years I come to really enjoy the Nexus. Felt like a kid in a candy shop with all the great mods I found that brought Oblivion to life for me. There are actually a couple I think are worth paying for. But I'm thinking it's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.
universal208
at some point on page 5(or 6) of the discussion a couple of folks said that the days of sites like nexus are numbered. I don’t think that is entirely possible, it might change the way things are done, but the modding community will continue to exist. the way I see it even if steam, will gain overall control of all mods that are created, the sharing of mods between modders won’t be affected, because in the end no one can stop you from uploading a resource like a mesh, texture or a script, which have not been put together as a mod file, and is not subject to the valve business rules. And if such a state is reached I think there will be a great division in the gaming community: on one side the modders and the people who are willing to go the extra mile of inserting the mod into their game, manually adding it to the game content, or gathering the resources and generating the mod themselves, and on the other all the other people not interested in the modding experience that much, happy enough to get whatever they can get from the registered services of the manufacturer. These people will be the end-losers in all of this, because experienced modders will avoid uploading their work “for the masses”, and this work will only be shared among the “connoisseurs". And if you want to take it one step further, I seem to recall Todd Howard saying in the weeks before the game was released that Bethesda has appreciated what the community has done with their CS, and that they appreciated the contribution the modders had brought in the past. If you are familiar with the previous instalments and with the popular modifications, it’s easy to spot some of the tweaks with Skyrim. Not to mention that the very thing the company bragged about, which is the evolution of the game based on previous products, as the company tries to achieve that “perfect” game was without doubt influenced by the modding community. This very fact was what set Bethesda apart from many others. Well if the community feels discouraged of making an open contribution, and all the great ideas are shared just between a few friends, I think the future looks pretty bleak for the next instalment of TES. :geek:
scot
I really really really hope this new patch fixes my crashes, ever since patch 1.3.10 my game became unplayable, if not well can´t do nothing cause I can´t return the game because of steam wich make them thieves -.-As for the workshop I´m not that worried, they said mods are free and that we can choose not to use it, plus there is a limit to the mod size we can upload there so I really don´t see that workshop thing working as bethesda think it will.In my opinion this workshop thing is an insult for what modders did for hem and it really looks like they are trying to control that for their benefit. If I was a true modder and created things from scratch I would just upload the esp on steam and if people wanted meshes and textures they would have to download from the full mod here on the nexus that way they only had control over the esp file and not the stuff I would create.
