archimagekhan
Hello, I have to change my hard drive. And I would like to boost my computer performance. I'm far from being a specialist, that is why I ask : I'm essentially playing Skyrim, and it is for this particular game and software that I'd like better performance. I've read lot of good things about SSHD. So my question is : does getting SSD 1To, or SSD + HD really worth the price difference compared to just SSHD, considering that I mainly want to enjoy the performance for Skyrim? Project579
Never buy sSSHD if you are planning to install the OS on it because it will die in a year and is still noticeably slower then an ssd.
archimagekhan
Sounds pretty clear :-D
L3s7ing
I tried an SSHD once and i couldn't even notice a difference to an good HDD. However using an SSD increased the perfomance in my case extremly. Loading Screens are much shorter (i'm playing with 2-4k textures and over 300 mods) and i could even see some improvment in texture loading. But i wouldn't recommend an SSD "just" for Skyrim. They're very expensive for just this use.So stick with an HDD or try to go for an smaller SSD would be my recommendation.
archimagekhan
Ok, seems that SSHD isn't the option then... but If I take a small SSD, just for skyrim, is it possible to just move my actual game to it, or do I have to reinstall? The thing is that I intended to do a clone of my actual disk so I could go on with my load order and saves etc... I have also a very heavily modded game that I spent months on to make it stable, customize etc... and I don't want to reinstall.
L3s7ing
Moving only the game to another could be problematic. You would need to adjust your Mod Manager to the right directory, which should be going fine, but adjusting Steam is just f*#@ed up... don't know why they never made a build in option to move games to other drives or locations.I know there are some tutorials how to trick steam and move games without downloading or installing them over but I personally never tried them. If u're using Mod Organizer for all of your mods it would work even with reinstalling the game I think (with the adjusts in mod organizer itself). Cloning would be the easiest option, but I also have no experience with Skyrim there...
Project579
Take an SSD install the OS and Skyrim inside it, if you place your OS on an HDD everything would be slower even if some files are inside an SSD.
archimagekhan
For now I've got an HDD 1To with two virtual disk, C and D. OS is on C and Skyrim is on D. So the solution for me, if I want to enjoy the performance of an SSD for skyrim, is to get a 1To SSD and clone my actual disk? EDit : or maybe I should take an hdd 1To and a SSD 500 Go. Clone C on the HDD and D on the SSD (I know this is ok). Once done, I move windows 10 from the hdd to the SSD using "EaseUs todo backup", for example? Project579
Why are you using virtual disks? wouldn't it be easier to just make 2 partitions? Anyway i think you can clone the C partition to the SSD and then move what you need of Skyrim manually.
archimagekhan
By virtual disk, I meant partitions (sorry I'm french and not very skilled in computers ;-) Moving Skyrim manually? But it will change its path won't it? If I clone C on the SSD, the SSD will be known as C, and for now my skyrim is on D... moving skyrim to C, isn't that a problem for steam?
