    • Yes, there's nothing I won't watch. I even watch the extreme stuff. What?!

I don't want this to turn into a discussion of how in America, boobs are bad but Freddy Kruger is okay, please. Besides, France, England, and Serbia have been producing some damned nasty horror for a while :P (Martyrs, Isolation (well, technically Irish) and A Serbian Film). So I guess what I'm saying is try to stay on topic and no attacks on the person (or their country of origin). :D

Back to the topic, are there any horror fans here? What do you like, and why? What won't you watch, and why? And if you don't like it, tell me why.

I love horror. I watched my first horror film at the age of four: The Blob, the 1950s version. My mother loves them too, and since we aren't very close it's one of the few fond memories I have of her. She thought for sure I'd have a nightmare, but I didn't. Over the years, I grew to enjoy many movies and sub-genres, and while i have a steadfast few (in varying levels of quality) I always enjoy watching new things.

There are films, however, that I will not touch with a ten-foot pole. Most of the time, this is because of real or rumored animal deaths in the process of making the film. I know what you're thinking "Wow, you value animals over humans?" The issue here is, the human actors removed the fake blood and guts, washed off the blood, and went home after the day's filming. The animals weren't so lucky.

Other times it's certain kinds of subject matter (I regret, really regret, watching A Serbian Film to see if it was as bad as I had heard. I STILL was not prepared for what I saw. I think even Molag Bal would have turned that one off.) and I wouldn't go near Men Behind the Sun or August Underground if you paid me. Not that I don't watch extreme horror, just some movies cross the line twice then go back for more where I'm concerned.

Not a huge fan of the genre myself, but I am partial to a horror every now and again. You mentioned The Blob. Which really had an impact on me child and was one of the first horrors I ever saw. Classic. For many years I thought that the total faceless, unfeeling, inhumanness of that idea was what made it so scary. It just digested you. that was all it did. nasty thing.

I do not care for slasher movies...I don't think those are horror...they just surprise you. I always yell at the dumb females that don't take off their high heels when they run. I like a good scary movie though....but I still turn all the lights on afterwards. *grin*

Scariest movie ever made..in my opinion.

The Exorcist.

Nuff said.

Definitely the Saw series. Lots of blood and gore obviously, but it isn't just mindless violence, there's a fair amount of suspense too.

There is reasoning behind the violence and that adds depth to Jigsaw as a character, though I can't say anymore. I don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't watched the films (hope I haven't said too much).

That said, I haven't yet brought myself to watch Saw VI. Maybe I'll have the courage one day.

The Exorcist is on of the few that genuinely scared me. I don't like slsher films really, except for the first Halloween in 1978 and the first Nightmare on Elm Street. The only other films that geuinely scared me were:

Event Horizon

Candyman

Halloween

the Thing (1982 version)

It's not often that they affect me deeply. Gross me out, disturb me a bit, get under my skin, yes.

My girlfriend and I love horror, The Carpenter Thing is in my top ten for life too. Event Horizon springs upon Sam Neils' performance imo, he's great in everything - Watch Carpernters' In the Mouth of Madness if you've never seen it :)

Oh and for Halloween, I think Halloween 3 : Season of the Witch is the best one of those - unrelated to the others, but it's just so horrible

We've seen a few now that got switched off early though. Generally I've got a slightly stronger stomach than she does for the gratuitous stuff but the only one I've watched so far that actually made me angry was the Uwe Bolle film Seed. Kinda wanted to go round to his house and thump him after watching a quarter of that...
