Retexturing ethos

I'm just curious if anyone has any opinions about how retexturing is/should be done. Often I see mods on the Skyrim site that increase textures to beautiful clarity with higher resolutions, but end up with a different look. Obviously this is a modding community and thus changing the game in all kinds of ways is the whole point. But as much as I like the beautiful new textures I am often leery when I think the look is changed from the style Bethesda originally designed. I don't like the textures that remove the dirt from characters and am wary of taking on textures that make wood grains look more detailed but also brighter or less knotty or newer. Often it seems to me the new textures make the universe look a bit too clean and new/unlived in.

Anyone else have similar qualms or any guiding principles about retexturing?

To cut story short you might want to track this topic as we are focusing our efforts to create one big texture pack (by means of merging existing work, and also creating new textures) which would keep close as possible to original design vison of Bethesda artists.

Opinions of users and artists most welcome.
